Organic thin-film solar cells with a conducting polymer (CP)/fullerene (C60) interpenetrating heterojunction structure, fabricated by spin-coating a CP onto a C60 deposit thin film, have been investigated and demonstrated to have high efficiency. The photovoltaic properties of solar cells with a structure of indium-tin-oxide/C60/ poly(3-hexylthiophene) (PAT6)/Au have been improved by the insert...

We report the first measurements of the glass transition temperature Tg for thin freely standing polystyrene (PS) films. We have used Brillouin light scattering to measure Tg for freely standing films of different thicknesses. We find that Tg decreases linearly with film thickness h for h # 700 Å, with a reduction of 70 K for a film with h 290 Å. These measurements characterize unambiguously ...

A combination of surface energy-guided blade coating and inkjet printing is used to fabricate an all-printed high performance, high yield, and low variability organic thin film transistor (OTFT) array on a plastic substrate. Functional inks and printing processes were optimized to yield self-assembled homogenous thin films in every layer of the OTFT stack. Specifically, we investigated the effe...

When a laminate of a thin metal film on a tough polymer substrate is stretched, the metal film may rupture at strains ranging from a few percent to a few tens of percent. This variation in the ductility of the metal film is modulated by the adhesion of the metal/polymer interface. To study this modulation, here we use the finite element method to simulate the co-evolution of two processes: debo...

The elastic moduli of ultrathin poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) films of thickness ranging from 200 nm to 5 nm were investigated using a buckling-based metrology. Below 40 nm, the apparent modulus of the PS and PMMA films decreases dramatically, with an order of magnitude decrease compared to bulk values for the thinnest films measured. We can account for the observed dec...

The formation of high-density silver nanoparticles and a novel method to precisely control the spacing between nanoparticles by temperature are demonstrated for a tunable surface enhanced Raman scattering substrates. The high-density nanoparticle thin film is accomplished by self-assembling through the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique on a water surface and transferring the particle monolayer t...

A crack and its propagation is a challenging multiscale materials phenomenon of broad interest, from nanoscience to exogeology. Particularly in fracture mechanics, periodicities are of high scientific interest. However, a full understanding of this phenomenon across various physical scales is lacking. Here, we demonstrate periodic interlayer-mediated thin film crack propagation and discuss the ...

Partially coating perpendicularly aligned carbon nanotube arrays with an appropriate polymer thin film along their tube length provides a novel concept for developing new sensors of high sensitivity, good selectivity, and excellent environmental stability for the detection of a broad class of chemical vapors with low power consumption. The absorption and desorption of chemical vapors by the pol...

The structural evolution of low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) diblock copolymer thin film with various initial film thicknesses on silicon substrate under thermal annealing was investigated by atomic force microscopy, optical microscopy, and contact angle measurement. At film thickness below half of the interlamellar spacing of the diblock copolymer (6.2 nm)...

This paper reports on the recent work carried out as part of the EU funded NanoMend project. The project seeks to develop integrated process inspection, cleaning, repair and control systems for nano-scale thin films on large area substrates. In the present study flexible photovoltaic films have been the substrate of interest. Flexible PV films are the subject of significant development at prese...
