We are currently developing a physical modeling method for string instruments based upon the direct solution of the string equation, rather than the simulation of travelling waves as is instead done in the Waveguide method. Although computationally heavier in comparison with Waveguides, our approach enables any physical parameter to be time-varied during playing, obtaining thus interesting effe...
A fundamental problem that agro-environmental sciences have to face today is the lack of interdisciplinary linkages between the various disciplines dealing with agriculture and environment and the physics of the “soil medium” organization, which is the object of study of the pedology. Currently, the soil medium is far from being considered as the organized physical medium providing the physical...
Modeling and simulation have been typically pursued in isolation. When a model of a complex system is reported in the literature, there is a considerable emphasis on the end result, the model. On the other hand, many works on simulation assume the existence of models, and focus on developing representations and reasoning about the models in the representations. However, not every physical syste...
Mobile source emission models currently used by state and federal agencies (e.g., Environmental Protection Agency’s MOBILE and California Air Resources Board’s EMFAC) are often inadequate for analyzing the emissions impact of various transportation control measures, intelligent transportation systems, alternative fuel vehicles, and more sophisticated inspection/maintenance programs contained in...
This paper briefly reviews several recent developments in physical modeling of woodwind musical instruments. In particular, issues with regard to real-time synthesis of toneholes, the single-reed excitation mechanism, and conical air columns are discussed. A programming environment appropriate for real-time physical modeling synthesis is presented, as well as issues of control demanded by recen...
A method is proposed which facilitates express analysis of the results of large distributed simulations of physical systems. The method uses the domain decomposition technique based on the idea of transition probabilities. The proposed approach opens the possibility of conducting parallel simulations of strongly coupled systems on loosely coupled distributed computer platforms, such as grid com...
Electronic, software-managed mechanisms using, for example, radiofrequency identification (RFID) cards, enable great flexibility in specifying access control policies to physical spaces. For example, access rights may vary based on time of day or could differ in normal versus emergency situations. With such fine-grained control, understanding and reasoning about what a policy permits becomes su...
The 2017 Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling (SPM 2017) was held in Berkeley, California from Monday, June 19 to Wednesday, June 21, 2017. Since its inception in 1991, the Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling has been the primary international forum for disseminating research results and exchanging new ideas of applications complete with the relevant mathematical theory of solid modeli...
This paper deals with designing material parameters for physical models. It is shown that the characteristic relation between modal frequencies and damping factors of a sound object is the acoustic invariant of the material from which the body is made. Thus, such characteristic relation can be used for designing damping models for a conservative physical model to represent a particular material.
