Photoconsortium is an association of photographic archives that contributed over 450.000 images of early photography to Europeana. In this contribution we discuss lessons learned, in particular on digitization and copy‐ right issues and describe the activities involved in managing state-of-the-art digi‐ tized photographic archives. We discuss follow-on project activities such as Europeana Space...
Photography is a 2-dimensional medium which represents 3-dimensional space, as a central projection on a plane. As it is possible to represent 3D space by a photograph, it is also possible, using mathematical methods, to obtain data about 3-dimensional structures from the data registered on photographs. We used two methods to obtain spatial data from photographs: restitution of perspective imag...
The compositing of two or more people into a single image is a common form of manipulation. We describe how such composites can be detected by estimating a camera’s intrinsic parameters from the image of a person’s eyes. Differences in these parameters across the image are used as evidence of tampering.
Terrain patterns play an important role in determining the nature of water resources and related hydrological modelling. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), offering an efficient way to represent ground surface, allow automated direct extraction of hydrological features (Garbrecht and Martz, 1999), thus bringing advantages in terms of processing efficiency, cost effectiveness, and accuracy assessm...
Although photographic papers have been manufactured for at least as long as film has been made, there is little in the literature on their image microstructure properties. One of the earliest comprehensive experimental investigations of the “sharpness” (really the MTF) of photographic papers is that reported by Ruth Stapleton.1 One of the general conclusions of her work was that the Modulation ...
This field study assessed whether areas in an alleged haunt and a control site, and active and inactive areas within the haunt site, differed with respect to the presence of contextual variables that might contribute to haunt experiences and exhibited differential incidences of photographic anomalies. Contextual (aesthetic, physical, and structural) variables were measured, and randomized photo...
The aim of this study was to assess agreement in the diagnosis of dental fluorosis performed by a standardized digital photographic method and a clinical examination (gold standard). 49 children (aged 7-9 years) were clinically evaluated by a trained examiner for the assessment of dental fluorosis. Central incisors were evaluated for the presence or absence of dental fluorosis and were photogra...
Construction materials used in building structures, such as masonry, wood, and reinforced concrete, deteriorate over time because of many factors including poor design, defective materials or manufacture, and poor workmanship. This article is concerned with estimates of masonry deterioration and the effects of covariates on the damage to bricks on the walls of ve multiple-story buildings of a...
This work proposes a region-based shape signature that uses a combination of three different types of pattern spectra. The proposed method is inspired by the connected shape filter proposed by Urbach et al. We extract pattern spectra from the red, green and blue color bands of an image then incorporate machine learning techniques for application in photographic image retrieval. Our experiments ...
