Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) has become a powerful new tool in studying the dynamics of molecules and clusters. It has been applied to processes ranging from energy flow in electronically excited states of molecules to electron solvation dynamics in clusters. This review covers experimental and theoretical aspects of TRPES, focusing on studies of neutral and negatively charg...

We report time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3). We observe oscillatory modulations of the electronic structure of both the bulk and surface states at a frequency of 2.23 THz due to coherent excitation of an A(1g) phonon mode. A distinct, additional frequency of 2.05 THz is observed in the surface state only. The lower phonon fr...

Using cluster perturbation theory, it is shown that the spectral weight and pseudogap observed at the Fermi energy in recent angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of both electron- and hole-doped high-temperature superconductors find their natural explanation within the t-t(')-t(")-U Hubbard model in two dimensions. The value of the interaction U needed to explain the experiments for electr...

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small number of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow window of high-doped Ce concentration after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr(1.3-x)La0.7Ce(x)CuO4 (PLCCO) ...

The four-body dissociative photodetachment (DPD) dynamics of O-8 were studied using photoelectron photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectroscopy. All four neutral photofragments were measured in coincidence with the photodetached electron, yielding a five-body kinematically complete experiment. Velocity and angular correlations for DPD of O(-)(8) are presented and compared to those for O(-)(6). T...

We quantify the nonadiabatic contributions to the vibronic sidebands of equilibrium and explicitly time-resolved nonequilibrium photoelectron spectra for a vibronic model system of trans-polyacetylene. Using exact diagonalization, we directly evaluate the sum-over-states expressions for the linear-response photocurrent. We show that spurious peaks appear in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation fo...

Vanadium sesquioxide, V(2)O(3), boasts a rich phase diagram whose description necessitates accounting for many-body Coulomb correlations. The spectral properties of this compound have been successfully addressed within dynamical mean field theory to the extent that results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments have been correctly predicted. While photoemission spectroscopy probes t...

A novel pulsed anion source has been developed, using plasma entrainment into a supersonic expansion. A pulsed discharge source perpendicular to the main gas expansion greatly reduces unwanted "heating" of the main expansion, a major setback in many pulsed anion sources in use today. The design principles and construction information are described and several examples demonstrate the range of a...

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the energy gap(s) in (Bi,Pb)2(Sr,La)2CuO6+delta. We find that the spectral gap has two components in the superconducting state: a superconducting gap and pseudogap. Differences in their momentum and temperature dependence suggest that they represent two separate energy scales. Spectra near the node reveal a sharp peak with a small ...
