Cathepsin B is a cystein proteinase scarcely studied in crustaceans. Its function has not been clearly described in shrimp species belonging to the sub-order Dendrobranchiata, which includes the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and other species from the Penaeidae family. Studies on vertebrates suggest that these lysosomal enzymes intracellularly hydrolize protein, as other cystein proteinases...

The development of shrimp aquaculture in Mexican coasts of the Gulf of Mexico began to be explored using the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in the mid 90's. Many concerns over the risk of disease transmission to the economically important native penaeids, have been the main deterrent for the aquaculture of L. vannamei in the region. Concurrently, more than 10 years of research experi...

introduction: white spot syndrome virus (wssv) is one of the most deadly infectious pathogens of the shrimp culture industry. neither effective vaccines nor efficient treatments are currently available for this disease. vibrio species are well known dominant bacterial pathogens in the shrimp ponds. as facultative pathogenic bacteria, it is possible that vibrio spp. along with wssv to co-infect ...

The first genome sequence of a Mexican white spot syndrome virus is presented here. White spot syndrome is a shrimp pandemic virus that has devastated production in Mexico for more than 10 years. The availability of this genome will greatly aid epidemiological studies worldwide, contributing to the molecular diagnostic and disease prevention in shrimp farming.

this investigation was conducted to survey the growth and survival rate, weight average, fcr, and harvestable white leg shrimp biomass during 107 days culture in mono and poly culture earth pond system with mullet fish. nine 600 m2 earth ponds  were prepared and stocked with 20 shrimp post larvae in each pond (mean weight 0.007 ±0.001 g) for three treatments (each with three replication). after...

UNLABELLED The Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is widely used in aquaculture, where it is reared at high stocking densities, temperatures, and nutrient concentrations. Here we report that adult L. vannamei shrimp emit the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) at an average rate of 4.3 nmol N2O/individual × h, which is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than previously measured N2O emiss...

Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, is the major species used in aquaculture of shrimp as of food for humans. Feed used in commercial cultivation of shrimp increasingly contains plant protein as a nutritional source, which has the advantage over animal protein in terms of both cost and sustainability. However, a problem with the use of plant protein, such as soybean meal, is that it lac...

The present study was conducted to evaluate some of the physic-chemical parameters(Temperature, pH, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, nitrite, Hardness, Nitrite- Nitrogen, Ammonia , Transparency and clorophyll a) affecting the growth of Western Pacific shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in 9 semi-intensive shrimp ponds (at the 3 farms) During a one period culture (six month) at villages in northern of Tia...

The present study investigates the effects of different routes of inulin administration as prebiotic on gut microbiota and survival rate of Indian white shrimp post-larvae. Four hundred and fifty Indian white shrimp post-larvae (PL1) were stocked in nine tanks. The tanks were assigned into three treatments: feeding with inulin-treated (110 mg L(-1)) Artemia nauplii (I-T), feeding with inulin-en...

White-spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a devastating, infectious virus affecting shrimp. Although sensitive techniques involving PCR have been developed to assist farmers in screening shrimp (brood stock) for WSSV prior to stocking ponds, such practices have not yet been applied in Korea. Despite the rationality of implementing screening, there has been some doubt as to whether the stocking of WSS...
