BACKGROUND The emergence and rapid spreading of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains has become a major health threat worldwide. To better understand the genetic recombination related with the acquisition of drug-resistant elements during bacterial infection, we performed complete genome analysis on three newly isolated multidrug-resistant A. baumannii strains from Beijing using ...

The genus Acinetobacter comprises 47 characterised genomic species, among which species belonging to the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus–Acinetobacter baumannii complex are the most clinically relevant. Within this complex, A. baumannii, Acinetobacter nosocomialis (formerly genomic species 13TU) and Acinetobacter pittii (formerly genomic species 3) are frequently associated with hospital-acquired i...

It has been suggested that carcinogenesis associated with chronic inflammation involves DNA damage by nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive species secreted from macrophages and neutrophils. The guanine moiety of DNA reacts with NO, yielding two major deamination products: xanthine (Xan) and oxanine (Oxa). Oxa reacts further with polyamines and DNA binding proteins to form cross-link adducts. In...

Oxanine (Oxa) is a deaminated base lesion derived from guanine in which the N(1)-nitrogen is substituted by oxygen. This work reports the mutagenicity of oxanine as well as oxanine DNA glycosylase (ODG) activities in mammalian systems. Using human DNA polymerase beta, deoxyoxanosine triphosphate is only incorporated opposite cytosine (Cyt). When an oxanine base is in a DNA template, Cyt is effi...

A chromosomally encoded class D beta-lactamase, OXA-114, was characterized from Achromobacter xylosoxidans strain CIP69598. beta-Lactamase OXA-114 shared 56% amino acid identity with the naturally occurring class D beta-lactamase of Burkholderia cenocepacia and 42% identity with the acquired oxacillinases OXA-9 and OXA-18. OXA-114 has a narrow-spectrum hydrolysis profile, although it includes i...

A chromosomally encoded oxacillinase, OXA-69, was characterized from Acinetobacter baumannii AYE. beta-Lactamase OXA-69 shared 97% amino acid identity with the recently described OXA-51 enzyme of A. baumannii and 62 and 56% amino acid identity with the carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinases OXA-24 and OXA-23, respectively. Biochemical characterization of the purified OXA-69 revealed a narrow-spec...

Eighty-two carbapenem-resistant isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii from a single hospital in Bilbao were typed into two major clusters and several subclusters. Disk synergy tests and PCR indicated the production of a zinc-independent OXA-class carbapenemase. Sequencing identified this enzyme, OXA-40, as a variant of the OXA-24-OXA-25-OXA-26 cluster.

Background: Oxaliplatin (OXA) chemotherapy is widely used in the clinical treatment of colon cancer. However, chemo-resistance is still a barrier to effective chemotherapy in cases of colon cancer. Accumulated evidence suggests that the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) may be a critical factor in chemo-sensitivity. The present study investigated the effects of Zinc finger E-box binding h...
