OBJECTIVE The incidence of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is much lower in Japan than in the United States. The number of deaths from PTE, however, has gradually increased. The present study was designed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of PTE in Japan. METHODS AND MATERIALS We sent 5,582 questionnaires to inquire about the number of new cases of PTE between August 1, 2000 an...
Haemoptysis is a common complication of pulmonary aspergillosis, being reported in 52-78% of patients.' 2 Although most episodes are minor, some patients will succumb to massive haemoptysis.34 While surgical resection has been recommended for patients with massive haemoptysis it is not without considerable risk. We report the use of selective bronchial artery embolisation in a patient about to ...
PURPOSE The 2-[F-18]-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake in positron emission tomography (PET) and serum neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are recently noteworthy prognostic factors. We studied the prognostic factor to predict early recurrence after curative resection for pulmonary adenocarcinoma including FDG uptake and NLR. METHODS We performed a retrospective review of 23 patients who un...
AIMS To discover whether variations in thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) staining in different subtypes and patterns of pulmonary adenocarcinoma are related to the putative origin of the tumour. In addition, to confirm the specificity of TTF-1 for pulmonary (as opposed to other sites) adenocarcinoma, to examine the possible prognostic relevance of TTF-1 positivity in lung cancer, and to re...
Ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is a lethal disease. Surgical extirpation only offers the slim chance for long-term survival in localized disease. We report on a 73 year old female patient who initially underwent successful resection of pancreatic adenocarcinoma in May 2005. She was treated with adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine. In October 2010 the patient noticed increasing dyspnea...
Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), previously known as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation, is a rare developmental lung abnormality associated with rhabdomyosarcoma, pleuropulmonary blastoma, and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung. We report an unusual case of a 10-day-old male newborn with a left lower lobe pulmonary cyst who underwent lobectomy, which revealed type II C...
We report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection in an immunosuppressed individual occurring in a non-endemic area. Geographic risk is not sufficient to rule out Strongyloidiasis in susceptible individuals presenting with severe pulmonary disease.
Mucor is a ubiquitous fungus that belongs to the family of Zygomycetes, though a noninvasive saprophyte in the normal host, it can cause life threatening infections in immunocompromised patients, including angioinvasive pulmonary mucormycosis; a disease notorious for its high mortality. This article tracks the ever-changing management of pulmonary mucormycosis over the last 130 years, and how t...
Pulmonary lesions following paraquat poisoning are believed to be almost invariably fatal. The three patients reports here survived despite persistent radiological change. One of the patients died after taking a larger dose of paraquat one year later, and at necropsy histological changes attributable to the two episodes of paraquat poisoning were apparent.
