When training a deep neural network for supervised image classification, one can broadly distinguish between two types of latent features of images that will drive the classification: (i) ‘immutable’ or ‘core’ features that are really inherent to the object in question and do not change substantially from one instance of the object to another and (ii) ‘mutable’ or ‘style’ features such as posit...

A set G of points on a 1.5-dimensional terrain, also known as an x-monotone polygonal chain, is said to guard the terrain if any point on the terrain is seen by a point in G. Two points on the terrain see each other if and only if the line segment between them is never strictly below the terrain. The minimum terrain guarding problem asks for a minimum guarding set for the given input terrain. W...

We consider guarding a city of k vertical buildings, each having a rectangular base, by placing guards only at vertices. The aim is to use the smallest number of guards. The problem is a 2.5D variant of the traditional art gallery problem, and finds applications in urban security. We give upper and lower bounds on the number of guards needed for a few versions of the problem. Specifically, we p...

There exist many variants of guarding an orthogonal polygon in an orthogonal fashion: sometimes a guard can see an entire rectangle, or along a staircase, or along a orthogonal path with at most k bends. In this paper, we study all these guarding models in the special case of orthogonal polygons that have bounded treewidth in some sense. Exploiting algorithms for graphs of bounded treewidth, we...

Substrate noise effects caused by the integration of a DC-DC converter into a 0.13 μm CMOS technology integrated circuit are investigated in this paper. Simulations performed using the Substrate Noise Analyst tool show strong impact of switching and power supply noise on a sensitive analog block. The dependence of substrate noise coupling on physical separation distance, floorplanning and intro...

We put forward the notion of self-guarding cryptographic protocols as a countermeasure to algorithm substitution attacks. Such self-guarding protocols can prevent undesirable leakage by subverted algorithms if one has the guarantee that the system has been properly working in an initialization phase. Unlike detection-based solutions they thus proactively thwart attacks, and unlike reverse firew...

We obtain a polynomial time approximation scheme for the 1.5D terrain guarding problem, improving upon several recent constant factor approximations. Our algorithm is a local search algorithm inspired by the recent results of Chan and Har-Peled [3] and Mustafa and Ray [18]. Our key contribution is to show the existence of a planar graph that appropriately relates the local and global optimum.

For a polygon P with n vertices, the vertex guarding problem asks for the minimum subset G of P ’s vertices such that every point in P is seen by at least one point in G. This problem is NP-complete and APX-hard. The first approximation algorithm (Ghosh, 1987) involves decomposing P into O ( n ) cells that are equivalence classes for visibility from the vertices of P . This discretized problem ...

We propose a new model of realistic input: k-guardable objects. An object is k-guardable if its boundary can be seen by k guards in the interior of the object. In this abstract, we describe a simple algorithm for triangulating k-guardable polygons. Our algorithm, which is easily implementable, takes linear time assuming that k is constant.

For many species, mate guarding results in dramatic departures from normal behaviour that reflect compromised attention to feeding and other activities. Such departures have previously been difficult to document in primates, however. Data were gathered on two aspects of male behaviour that were predicted to be constrained during consortships, individual travel distance and duration of feeding b...
