Optical buffering is known to significantly improve the performance of optical packet and burst switched networks and a number of useful analytic models for the case of Poisson traffic have been proposed previously. In this paper, we propose an approximate analytic model for generally distributed arrivals, specifically treating Gammadistributed interarrival times, and show that the variance of ...

We present simultaneous X-ray and optical B and V band light curves of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 3783 spanning 2 years. The flux in all bands is highly variable and the fluctuations are significantly correlated. As shown before by Stirpe et al. the optical bands vary simultaneously, with a delay of less than 1.5 days but both B and V bands lag the X-ray fluctuations by 3–9 days. This delay points ...

A simple and robust refractive index (RI) sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been demonstrated. A section of optical microfiber drawn from silica fiber is employed as the sensing arm. Because of the evanescent field, a slight change of the ambient RI will lead to the variation of the microfiber propagation constant, which will further change the optical length. In order to compen...

Optical buffering is a major challenge in realizing all-optical packet switching. In this paper we propose a new buffer called a multipleinput single-output FIFO (MISO-FIFO) optical buffer that supports several functions normally associated with electronic RAM. Our structure reduces the physical size of a buffer by up to an order of magnitude or more by allowing reuse of its basic optical delay...

We propose a high-reflectivity-resolution coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with a novel scheme of delay shift averaging (DSAV) by using an optical frequency comb source and a tunable delay line to suppress the fading noise. We show theoretically and experimentally that the novel DSAV scheme is equivalent, in realizing a high reflectivity resolution, to our previously repor...

We experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable optical converter/encoder for quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) signals. The system utilizes nonlinear wavelength multicasting, conversion-dispersion delays, and simultaneous nonlinear multiplexing and sampling. We show baud rate tunability (31 and 20 Gbaud) and reconfigurable conversions from lower-order QAM signals to higher-order QAM signals ...

Analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) has been widely studied as a key interface technology to connect continuous analog signals and manageable digital signals. Recent tremendous growth of high-speed digital signal processing and communication systems has encouraged the demand for a high-speed ADC. For the realization of a high-speed ADC, optical approaches have much attracted recently [1]. ADC co...

We demonstrate a simple method for complete characterization (of amplitudes and phases) of short optical pulses, using only a dispersive delay line and an oscilloscope. The technique is based on using a dispersive delay line to stretch the pulses and recording the temporal interference of two delayed replicas of the pulse train. Then, by transforming the time domain interference measurements to...

The design of a multi-channel (M = 5) lattice form band pass optical delay line filter is reported. The filter synthesis is based on the division of total transfer function into unit blocks and the circuit parameters are obtained by constrained least square method. This band pass filter has better performance compared with the results obtained in the conventional design techniques. For a filter...

One of the key challenges in next generation access networks based on Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) technology is Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) process. In this paper we have proposed ‘Parnian’, a two-stage nested-auction for dynamic bandwidth allocation management in Ethernet Passive Optical Networks. In the proposed ‘Parnian’ method, by running nested auction, based on EPON arc...
