It is shown that dark solitons display an inherent instability for a strong saturation of the nonlinear refractive index provided that the background intensity exceeds a certain critical value. Such an instability manifests itself as a drift of a black soliton that transform into a gray soliton and radiation.

We study the control of modulational instability and pattern formation in a nonlinear dissipative feedback system with a periodic modulation of the material refractive index. We use a one-dimensional photonic lattice in a single-mirror feedback configuration and identify three mechanisms for pattern control: bandgap suppression of instability modes, periodicity induced pattern modes, and orient...

The formalism of coupled-mode theory, specialized to the continuum of radiation modes, allows us to extend the standard parabolic wave equation to include nonparaxial terms and vectorial effects, and, in particular, to generalize the nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes propagation in the presence of an intensity-dependent refractive index.

We report on the phenomenon of trapping and switching of one-dimensional spatial solitons in Kerr-type nonlinear media with transverse periodic modulation of the refractive index. The solitons slowly radiate upon propagation along the periodic structure and are finally trapped in one of its guiding channels. The position of the output channel can be varied by small changes in the launching angle.

Bistable responses of Fabry–Pérot cavities and all-optical arrays, in the presence of weak diffraction and strong diffusion, are studied both analytically and numerically. The model is a pair of nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled through a diffusion equation. The numerical computations are based on a split-step method with three distinct characteristics. This bistable nonlinear system, wit...
