We demonstrated a 670 mW continuous-wave single-frequency laser source at 780 nm by using external-cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation of a seeded fiber amplifier in periodically poled lithium niobate. A maximum second-harmonic conversion efficiency of 58% was achieved. The source can work stably over 1 h by locking the frequency-doubling cavity, while the power stability is less than 2%.

We report on intensity-dependent switching in lithium niobate directional couplers. Large nonlinear phase shifts that are due to cascading detune the coupling between the coupler branches, which makes all-optical switching possible. Depending on the input intensity, the output could be switched between the cross and the bar coupler branches with a switching ratio of 1:5 and a throughput of 80%.

We consider the interaction of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with short electrode gratings encompassing only few electrodes on 128 lithium niobate (LiNbO3). The qualifications of the reflectors are evaluated by comparing the part of incident SAW energy scattered by the structure into the bulk to the energy reflected back as a SAW.

We study numerically depressed-index cladding, buried, micro-structured optical waveguides that can be formed in a lithium niobate crystal by femtosecond laser writing. We demonstrate to which extent the waveguiding properties can be controlled by the waveguide geometry at the relatively moderate induced refractive index contrasts that are typical of the direct femtosecond inscription.

We report what we believe is the first observation of modulation instability in the anomalous-diffraction regions of a photonic lattice. The experiments were carried out in a 1D waveguide array fabricated in a lithium niobate crystal displaying the photovoltaic self-defocusing nonlinearity, and our results are confirmed numerically by simulating the nonlinear beam propagation.
