The potential use of synergistic mixtures of reagents for the solvent extraction of nickel (and cobalt) from lateritic leach liquors was pointed out in the early 1980s by Grinstead, who used dinonylnaphthalene sulphonic acid in conjunction with some 2-pyridyl compounds for the recovery of these metals from slightly acidic solutions1,2. Shortly thereafter, studies at Mintek revealed marked syner...

Two hydrogenases from the methanogenic bacterium Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum strain DeltaH have been purified and contain tightly bound nickel as well as the anticipated iron/sulfur atoms with a fixed ratio of 15-20 iron atoms per nickel. One hydrogenase reduces the 8-hydroxy-5-deazaflavin coenzyme factor 420 (F(420)), whereas the other has been purified as a methyl viologen-reducing h...

Mono- and bimetallic complexes of nickel supported by a terphenyl diphosphine have been synthesized. The reported complexes show diverse metal-arene interactions in the solid state. Reactions of an o,o'-biphenyldiyl dinickel complex with CO and dichloroalkanes lead to fluorene derivatives, indicating the formation of carbon-carbon bonds at a bimetallic moiety.

Using non-equilibrium Green function formalism in conjunction with density functional theory, we explore the spin-polarized transport characteristics of several planar n-acene molecules suspended between two semi-infinite Ni electrodes via the thiol group. We examine the spin-dependence transport on Ni-n-acenes-Ni junctions, while the number of fused benzene rings varies between 1 and 15. Intri...

Materials that will be used to construct an in situ, on-line purging system for the cone penetrometer were evaluated. Transfer efficiencies for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through stainless steel, nickel, aluminum, and Teflon® tubings were determined using a gas-phase mixture of VOCs containing trichloromethane, tetrachloromethane, 1,1,1- trichloroethane, tetrachloroethene, hexane, benzen...

Removal of heavy metals will allow elimination of toxic substances from environmental samples or will prevent their introduction into the environment. Silica gel will be used to form a complex with other compounds such as nitrilitriacetic acid (NTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 2mercaptoethanol by an acid catalyzed condensation. Compounds such as NTA were suspended with silica ge...

Versatile nickel catalysts enabled the step-economical synthesis of decorated indoles through alkyne annulations with anilines bearing removable directing groups. The C-H/N-H activation strategy efficiently occurred in the absence of any metal oxidants and with excellent selectivities.

Hypervalent alkylsilicates represent new and readily accessible precursors for the generation of alkyl radicals under photoredox conditions. Alkyl radicals generated from such silicates serve as effective hydrogen atom abstractors from thiols, furnishing thiyl radicals. The reactive sulfur species generated in this manner can be funneled into a nickel-mediated cross-coupling cycle employing aro...

Nickel, in the form of various alloys and compounds, has been widespread commercial use for over 100 years. Several million workers worldwide are exposed to airborne fumes, dust, mist containing nickel its compounds. Further, exposures by inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact occur nickel-producing industries, like mining, milling, melting, refining, nickel-using electroplating, welding, grind...

Algae are among the aquatic organisms that are severely exposed to increasing levels of pollutants, which are becoming a concern in marine ecosystems. Heavy metals are among the compounds for which their increase in high levels causes problems in the structure of algae communities in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the effect of different concentrations of Nickel (1.5, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 15 mg/...
