The catalytic activity of a series of coordinatively unsaturated NHC-M(III) (M = Rh, Ir; NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes was tested in the deuteration of secondary and tertiary silanes. Among these, [IrCl(I(t)Bu')(2)] provides the highest conversions to the deuterated species. Mechanistic studies highlight the reversible nature of the ortho-metalation reaction.

NHC ligands annulated to free-base porphyrins can be reversibly switched between electron-poor and electron-rich states upon protonation and deprotonation of the inner nitrogen atoms of the porphyrin. Metallation of the macrocycle with nickel(II) locks the peripheral NHC ligand in its electron-rich state.

The air stable NHC IPrBr is reported. A stereoelectronic study of IPrBr and its similarly stable relative IMesBr demonstrates metal complex specific changes in NHC donicity versus the ubiquitous IPr and IMes. Application to a Suzuki coupling and an iridium transfer hydrogenation gives superior outcomes using IPrBr and IMesBr.
