A major problem in patients with multiple myeloma is chemotherapy resistance, which develops in myeloma cells upon interaction with bone marrow stromal cells. However, few studies have determined the role of bone marrow adipocytes, a major component of stromal cells in the bone marrow, in myeloma chemotherapy resistance. We reveal that mature human adipocytes activate autophagy and upregulate t...

Smoldering myeloma is an asymptomatic plasma cell dyscrasia with a heterogeneous propensity to progress to active myeloma. In order to investigate the biology of smoldering myeloma patients with high risk of progression, we analyzed the genomic characteristics by FISH, SNP-arrays and gene expression profile of a group of patients with high-risk smoldering myeloma included in a multicenter rando...

Cardiac involvement is one of the most important prognostic markers in multiple myeloma. However, value novel biomarkers, such as soluble suppression tumorigenicity 2 (sST2), P-selectin unknown The aim work was to investigate additive predictive effects biomarkers and sST2 for cardiovascular events myeloma patients. Materials methods. Levels were after anticancer treatment a total 67 median fol...

The normal gamma globulins are notably heterogeneous in electrophoretic properties, extending in a continuous spectrum throughout a wide portion of the serum globulins in man and many other species (1). In contrast, the serum myeloma proteins found in patients with malignant plasma cell disease form discrete electrophoretic peaks. The apparent homogeneity of human myeloma proteins has been emph...

The mononuclear cells in the blood of myeloma patients have been reported to contain a high proportion of phenotypically abnormal myeloma B lymphocytes. These cells have been proposed to constitute the drug-resistant proliferative myeloma cell compartment. To determine the extent of B lymphocyte involvement, the proportion of clonotypic cells among the CD19-expressing cells from myeloma patient...

Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is typically presented with abundant monoclonal secretion of one type of immunoglobulin. The other classes of immunoglobulins, which are uninvolved and not secreted by malignant plasma cells, could be decreased. A number of previous studies reported the effect of suppression of uninvolved immunoglobulins on the outcome of patients with myeloma. However, its e...

Background: Microparticles (MPs) are small vesicles released from the cell membrane. Accordingly, these contain active molecules to mediate biological processes, including cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. The fusion of myeloma cell lines with immunized B lymphocytes is a critical step of hybridoma technology. MPs modulate lymphoproliferation, thereby facilitating B cell expansion ...

A patient presented with plasma cell leukaemia and was found to have an IgE secreting multiple myeloma. IgE myeloma is very rare with only 18 cases recorded. However, this case is the fifth recorded of IgE myeloma associated with plasma cell leukaemia. Since plasma cell leukaemia only occurs in 1.6% of all cases of myeloma, it seems certain that this is a significant association.

Human myeloma cells were purified from bone marrow aspirates from four patients having advanced myeloma, including one with common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen-positive myeloma. All of these myelomas had marked bone lytic lesions. From the culture supernatants of these purified myeloma cells, bone-resorbing activities were significantly revealed by 45Ca-release bone resorption assay, an...

Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from myeloma patients were studied for their capacity to lyse plasma cells from myeloma patients, benign monoclonal gammopathy (BMG) patients, and nonneoplastic disease patients. Plasma cells were isolated from bone marrow, labeled with 51Cr, and cultured with PBL isolated from patients with myeloma, BMG, or nonneoplastic disease, as well as normal individuals....
