Molecular epidemiology studies face a missing data problem, as biospecimen or imaging data are often collected on only a proportion of subjects eligible for study. We investigated all molecular epidemiology studies published as Research Articles, Short Communications, or Null Results in Brief in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention from January 1, 2009, to March 31, 2010, to characteriz...

Molecular epidemiology (ME) is a branch of epidemiology developed by merging molecular biology into epidemiological studies. In this paper, the authors try to discuss the ways that molecular epidemiology studies identify infectious diseases' causation and pathogenesis, and unravel infectious agents' sources, reservoirs, circulation pattern, transmission pattern, transmission probability, and tr...

This review briefly summarises the recent achievements in tuberculosis epidemiology associated with the introduction of molecular methods, and considers the implications of these methods for the understanding of occupational tuberculosis transmission. Special attention is paid to the relative contribution of recently transmitted tuberculosis; risk factors for recent transmission; and the occurr...

We collected epidemiologic and molecular data from Burkholderia mallei isolates from equines in Punjab, Pakistan from 1999 through 2007. We show that recent outbreaks are genetically distinct from available whole genome sequences and that these genotypes are persistent and ubiquitous in Punjab, probably due to human-mediated movement of equines.

To assess population diversities among 81 strains of fungi in the genus Fonsecaea that had been identified down to species level, we applied amplified fragment-length polymorphism (AFLP) technology and sequenced the internal transcribed spacer regions and the partial cell division cycle, beta-tubulin, and actin genes. Many species of the genus Fonsecaea cause human chromoblastomycosis. Strains ...

Genetic characterization of wild-type measles viruses provides a means to study the transmission pathways of the virus and is an essential component of laboratory-based surveillance. Laboratory-based surveillance for measles and rubella, including genetic characterization of wild-type viruses, is performed throughout the world by the WHO Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network, which serves 166 ...

There is a wide range of biomarkers that can be used in population-based molecular epidemiological studies of cancer. These include biomarkers of exposure, intermediate endpoints (e.g., biomarkers of early biological effect), disease, and susceptibility (1-7) (Fig. l). Hypothesis-driven biomarkefs have been used for many years in molecular epidemiology studies of cancer (e.9., measurement of xe...

Background and Purpose: Candida parapsilosis is a predominant species found in nosocomial infection, particularly in hospitalized patients. The molecular epidemiology of the clinical strains of this species has not been well studied. The present study was performed with the aim of investigating the microsatellite genotyping of Candida parapsilosis among the Iranian clinical isolates. Materials...
