thin-walled hollow steel columns, either circular or box shaped, are commonly used as piers in bridges. recent earthquakes, e.g. hyogoken-nanbu or kobe 1995, on the other hand have shown that these columns are vulnerable to damage when subjected to earthquake loading. this paper presents a new innovative thin-walled hollow steel column fabricated of corrugated plates, “thin-walled steel columns...

Friction coefficient and wear rate of different steel materials are investigated and compared in this study. In order to do so, a pin on disc apparatus is designed and fabricated. Experiments are carried out when different types of disc materials such as stainless steel 314 (SS 314), stainless steel 202 (SS 202) and mild steel slide against stainless steel 314 (SS 314) pin. Experiments are cond...

In this work the different contributions to the thermoelectric power (TEP) measurement during the dissolution process of M23C6 carbides in an X45Cr13 stainless steel have been evaluated. Thus, the influences of carbon and chromium contents in solid solution in the austenite, the austenite grain boundaries and the microstructure on the TEP have been determined.

The grain boundary structure is usually described by the coincidence site lattice (CSL) model based on the misorientation of adjoining crystals. Therefore, the objective of the present investigation is to seek the correlation between CSL fraction and creep resistance of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel (P91) with and without boron addition. Results showed that CSL fraction increases with increase in heat...

In this paper, the problem of automatic classification of rust grades on steel surfaces is considered. Three texture analysis methods are studied to form features from steel surfaces. Nearest Neighbor classifier is used for classification of steel surface types. The results indicate that automation of the inspection and classification process is feasible.

Steel manufacturers conduct quality control testing for a range of metals and trace elements to ensure the grade and performance of their final product. The Standardization Administration of China uses their GB/T 20125-2006 standard “Low-alloy steel – Determination of multi-element contents – Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric method” to control the quality of manufactured...

Steel factor is one of the growth factors that controls the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic cells and SCL, also known as Tcl-5 or Tal-1, is a transcription factor involved in erythropoiesis. In this report, we studied the role of SCL in the proliferation of human peripheral blood burst-forming unit-erythroid (BFU-E) and the effects of Steel factor on SCL expression in prolife...

In and post a fire event, an accurate and real-time evaluation and monitoring of a structure’s performance can assist firefighters for efficient survivor rescuing, which significantly improve the fire rescuing safety both for fire fighters and the trapped survivors. However, due to the lack of durable sensors, the structural performance of steel structures in fire conditions is challenging to b...
