Sexual courtship is a highly ritualized behavior in many animals. Recent work in the vinegar fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has illuminated how the pheromone cis-vaccenyl acetate modulates sexual behavior in the fly. Chemosensory receptors and a sexually dimorphic circuit activated by this pheromone have been identified. This minireview highlights recent advances in the field of fly courtship.

The catalytic water-oxidation activity of Wilkinson's iridium acetate trimer (1) has been characterized electrochemically and by using chemical oxidants. We show that 1 can function as an operationally homogeneous water-oxidation catalyst when driven with sodium periodate as a primary oxidant, but rapidly decomposes using Ce(IV) as a primary oxidant.

The title compound, C(12)H(14)O(6), was prepared by the Williamson reaction of 1,4-dihydroxy-benzene and methyl chloro-acetate with phase-transfer catalysis. The compound lies on an inversion center. The structure is stabilized by weak C-H⋯π inter-actions.

In the title compound, C(17)H(10)Br(2)O(5), the chromene ring is almost planar with minimal puckering [total puckering amplitude = 0.067 (4) Å]. The dihedral angle between chromeme ring system and phenyl ring is 3.7 (2)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-H⋯O inter-actions and an intramolecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bond also occurs.

A new benzimidazole compound, C(12)H(14)N(2)O(2), has been synthesized by the reaction of 2-methyl-1H-benzimidazole and ethyl 2-bromo-acetate. In the crystal structure, weak inter-molecular C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into chains. π⋯π Contacts (centroid⋯centroid distance = 3.713 Å) are observed. A C-H⋯π inter-action is also present. The N-C-C-O torsion angle is 178.4 (2)°.
