While Quality of Experience (QoE) has advanced very significantly as a field in recent years, the methods used for analyzing it have not always kept pace. When QoE is studied, measured or estimated, practically all the literature deals with Mean Opinion Scores (MOS). The MOS provides a simple scalar value for QoE, but it has several limitations, some of which are made clear in its name: for man...

The situation where classes arise by dividing the range of a continuous response variable into intervals is discussed. The focus is on assessing the performance of classi'ers. Due to the underlying continuum, all misclassi'cations are not equally grave. The probability of misclassi'cation (pmc) is not optimal in this situation. An alternative performance measure, the squared error rate (sqerr) ...

In this paper we compare two different models that can be used to describe velocity profiles of a handwritten stroke. The theoretical analysis and performance comparison on the fitting data figures and the mean square error clearly reflects the superiority of the delta lognormal model over the minimum jerk model to describe the velocity profile characterizing rapid movements.

The problem of separating out the signals for multiple speakers from a single mixed recording has received considerable attention in recent times. Most current techniques are based on the principle of masking: in order the separate out the signal for any speaker, frequency components that are not believed to belong to that speaker are suppressed. The signals for the speaker is reconstructed fro...

An example was given in the textbook All of Statistics (Wasserman, 2004, pages 186-188) for arguing that, in the problems with a great many parameters Bayesian inferences are weak, because they rely heavily on the likelihood function that captures information of only a tiny fraction of the total parameters. Alternatively he suggested non-Bayesian Horwitz-Thompson estimator, which cannot be obta...

Maximum likelihood methods are by far the most popular methods for deriving statistical estimators. However, parametric likelihoods require distributional specifications. The empirical likelihood is a nonparametric likelihood function that does not require such distributional assumptions, but is otherwise analogous to its parametric counterpart. Both likelihoods assume that the random variables...

The “hybrid” moments Z 2T T |ζ( 1 2 + it)| „ Z t+G t−G |ζ( 1 2 + ix)| dx m dt of the Riemann zeta-function ζ(s) on the critical line Re s = 1 2 are studied. The expected upper bound for the above expression is Oε(T G). This is shown to be true for certain specific values of k, l,m ∈ N, and the explicitly determined range of G = G(T ; k, l,m). The application to a mean square bound for the Melli...

We consider an alternative to the usual credibility premium that arises from squared-error loss, namely, a so-called equitable credibility premium (Promislow and Young, 1999). We derive formulas for the credibility weight in certain cases and give sufficient conditions for exact credibility.
