Thirteen patients with acute leukemias that were difficult to classify by the use of cytochemical staining and terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase (TdT) activity are reported. The phenotype of the leukemic cells was characterized by the presence of mature or early monocyte lineage antigens and intense Ia antigen expression detected by monoclonal antibodies, terminal deoxytransferase activ...

We used flow cytometry to determine the CD58 expression on nonmalignant B cells at different stages of maturation in the bone marrow and compared it with that of blasts in adult and pediatric precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). The mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of CD58 expression decreased significantly as nonmalignant B cells differentiated in the bone marrow from an ear...
CD27, a transmembrane disulfide-linked 55-kD homodimer, belongs to the nerve growth factor-receptor family, a group of homologous molecules involved in lymphocyte differentiation and selection. It is expressed on mature thymocytes, peripheral blood T cells, and a subpopulation of B cells. We investigated the expression of CD27 on malignant B cells representative for a broad range of stages in p...
An 80-year-old man was referred to our department because of lymphocytosis. His white cell count was 17.1 × 10(3)/μL, with 64% prolymphocytes. He did not exhibit splenomegaly or lymphadenopathy. Prolymphocytes were CD5(+), CD10(-), CD19(+), CD20(+), CD21(+weak), CD22(+), CD23(-), and HLA-DR(+), and expressed μδ/λ cell-surface immunoglobulins. G-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization usi...
The B203.13 monoclonal antibody was developed by immunizing mice with the B/monocyte biphenotypic cell line B1b. During normal hematopoiesis B203.13 is expressed on a fraction of CD34+ cells, while on mature cells it is only present on B-lymphocytes. We tested this antibody as a marker of childhood B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Bone marrow aspirates from 139 cases of early B-ALL and 2...
Chromosomal rearrangements observed in T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia involve the translocation of one T-cell receptor gene to either chromosome 14q32 or Xq28, deregulating the expression of cellular protooncogenes of unknown function, such as TCL1 or its homologue, MTCP1. In the human hematopoietic system, TCL1 expression is predominantly observed in developing B lymphocytes, whereas its overe...
Recombinant human interferon-beta 2 was produced in Escherichia coli by direct expression of cDNA encoding the mature protein sequence. At concentrations that stimulate DNA synthesis and growth in B-cell hybridomas and plasmacytomas, the cytokine was found to exert a strong inhibition on the growth of a number of carcinoma and leukemia/lymphoma cell lines. This antigrowth effect was observed in...
Abstract Stereotyped B-cell receptors (BCR) are frequent in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). In cell culture and mouse models of CLL, immunogenic epitopes these BCRs were shown to trigger specific T-cell responses control development. These results suggest vaccination autologous BCR-derived peptides as a novel therapy for CLL. See related article by Rovida et al., p. 729
