Robots have been shown to be useful in assisting surgeons in a variety of bone drilling and milling procedures. Examples include commercial systems for joint repair or replacement surgeries, with in vitro feasibility recently shown for mastoidectomy. Typically, the robot is guided along a path planned on a CT image that has been registered to the physical anatomy in the operating room, which is...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Cognitive load theory states that working memory is limited. This has implications for learning and suggests that reducing cognitive load (CL) could promote learning and skills acquisition. This study aims to explore the effect of repeated practice and simulator-integrated tutoring on CL in virtual reality (VR) mastoidectomy simulation. STUDY DESIGN Prospective trial. ...

OBJECTIVE To investigate a correlation between preoperative non-echo planar diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (non-EPI DW MRI) with surgical findings of localization and extension of cholesteatoma and to develop criteria for surgical planning. PATIENTS Preoperative non-EPI DWMRI was available and positive for cholesteatoma in 27 patients with primary and 23 with residual/recurrent...

Identification of recurrent cholesteatoma and differentiation from postoperative granulation tissue is important in a patient who has undergone mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma. We describe the diffusion-weighted imaging findings and apparent diffusion coefficient values in a case of recurrent cholesteatoma. This case suggests possible differentiation of cholesteatoma from granulation tissue on ...

The incidences of extracranial and intracranial complications of acute otitis media (AOM) in children have markedly decreased in the postantibiotic era. Zygomatic abscesses are the rarest type of abscesses originating from mastoiditis. This paper presents a case with a zygomatic abscess as a complication of acute coalescent mastoiditis in a 7-year-old girl who underwent cortical mastoidectomy a...
