The cloning of a-amylase gene of S . occidentalis and the construction of starch digestible strain of yeast, S . cerevisiae AS. 2.1364 with ethanol-tolerance and without auxotrophic markers used in fermentation industry were studied. The yeast/E . coli shuttle plasmid YCEpl partial library of S. occidentalis DNA was constructed and a-amylase gene was screened in S. cerevisiae by amylolytic acti...

We report the presence of an extremely high proportion of "aged" amylase in the serum and cyst fluid of a patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst. A salivary amylase inhibitor test helped us to differentiate these "aged" pancreatic amylases from salivary fractions having a similar electrophoretic mobility.

Th e paper presents numerical comparison of two methods of estimation of nonallelic interaction of QTL eff ects. In the fi rst method we assume that we observe only the plant phenotype, while in the second method we have additional information from the molecular markers observations. In this paper we analysed phenotypic data on 120 barley doubled haploid lines, derived from cross Clipper × Saha...

Previous studies have shown that amylase levels are reduced significantly in the pancreas and parotid gland of diabetic rats and that insulin reverses this effect and increases the secretory protein levels. In the pancreas, these changes in amylase protein levels are accompanied by parallel changes in amylase mRNA levels. In the present study, the effects of diabetes and subsequent insulin trea...

We report a case of primary bronchogenic adenocarcinoma, complicated by pleural effusion, in which very high pleural amylase activity was found, whilst serum amylase was normal. Isoamylase determination showed a salivary-type amylase. Concerning the origin of this enzyme, ultrastructural study of the malignant cells obtained from the pleural fluid suggested a local amylase synthesis. The pathop...

Brachybacterium sp. strain LB25 produces a maltooligosaccharide-forming amylase that improves product selectivity in water-miscible organic solvents. The enzyme hydrolyzed starch to produce maltotriose primarily. The structural gene encoding the amylase from strain LB25 was cloned and sequenced. The amino acid sequence of the product showed significant similarity (45 to 49%) to amylases from th...

The Rapignost-Amylase urinary test strip (Behringwerke Laboratories) provides an estimation of urine amylase which takes a few minutes and is easy to perform. During a period of 9 months, 84 patients had their urine tested with this strip by casualty officers in the Accident and Emergency Department of St George's Hospital, London. In addition, urine amylase, and plasma amylase and creatinine w...

Addition of albumin, gamma-globulin, alpha-casein or submaxillary mucin to the assay system for chromogenic measurement of human or rat amylase with blue starch increased the amylase activity, albumin having the most effect. These proteins seemed to increase the activity by protecting amylase from inactivation. Amylase activity was higher in urine samples showing proteinuria than in urine sampl...

Relatively little is known about the normal physiology of amniotic fluid, its dynamics, and its constituent enzymes and isoenzymes. The antenatal diagnosis of some metabolic errors is frequently based upon the investigation for the presence or absence of an enzyme in the amniotic fluid or cells. In establishing an antenatal diagnosis of this kind, it is essential that 2 major factors be borne i...

The effects of the phosphatase inhibitors calyculin A and okadaic acid on amylase release from streptolysin-O permeabilized rat pancreatic acini were investigated. Both agents induced similar biphasic effects with moderate potentiation of calcium-stimulated amylase release at medium and strong inhibition at higher concentrations. Calyculin A was thirty times more potent than okadaic acid and at...
