The lymphoid organs of mice show definite changes after cancer inoculation. In immune mice there is a tendency towards a lymphoid hyperplasia, while in susceptible mice more or less marked depletion of the lymphoid tissue takes place. These changes are evident at the end of the 3rd week after cancer inoculation.
Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes influence colorectal cancer progression. We have recently documented that tertiary lymphoid tissue in the colorectal cancer microenvironment orchestrates lymphocyte infiltration and that tertiary lymphoid tissue and lymphocytes cooperate in a coordinated antitumor immune response to improve patient outcome. Thus, tertiary lymphoid tissue represents a potential tar...
BACKGROUND The mechanism of ulceration in Crohn's disease remains unknown. AIMS To clarify the role of the follicle associated epithelium (FAE) of colonic lymphoid nodules in the formation of ulcers in Crohn's disease. METHODS After identification of colonic lymphoid nodules and aphthoid lesions by magnifying colonoscopy, 76 biopsy specimens were obtained from 10 patients with Crohn's disea...
As a step in the elucidation of human cancer immunity we studied antitumor activity of lymphoid cells by conducting a series of cultures using the primary culture of cells from spontaneous mammary cancers from C3H and RIll mice mixed with autochthonous lymphoid cells, and obtained the following results. 1) With 24 mammary tumors obtained from 24 mammary cancer. bearing mice, we prepared 22 susp...
The immune system of the gut has evolved a number of specific lymphoid structures that contribute to homeostasis in the face of microbial colonization and food-derived antigenic challenge. These lymphoid organs encompass Peyer's patches (PP) in the small intestine and their colonic counterparts that develop in a programed fashion before birth. In addition, the gut harbors a network of lymphoid ...
The earliest stages of lymphoid commitment from human pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells have not been defined. A clonogenic subpopulation of CD34(+)CD38(-) cord blood cells were identified that expressed high levels of the CD7 antigen and possessed only lymphoid potential. CD34(+)CD38(-)CD7(+) (CD7(+)) cells uniformly coexpressed CD45RA and HLA-DR; c-kit and Thy-1 expression was absent to lo...
Natural killer (NK) cells are important for immune protection of the gut mucosa. Previous studies have shown that under pathologic conditions NK cells, T cells and dendritic cells are found co-localised in secondary lymphoid organs where their interaction coordinates immune responses. However, in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALTs), there are few detailed reports on the distribution of ...
With the use of the cytochemical stain for horseradish peroxidase of Graham and Karnovsky (1966. J. Histochem. Cytochem.14:291), conjugates of horseradish peroxidase with ricin, wheat germ agglutinin, and phytohemagglutinin were employed for the morphologic demonstration of d-galactose (ricin), N-acetylglucosamine (wheat germ), and N-acetylgalactosamine (phytohemagglutinin) containing moieties ...
Ubiquitous Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects not only B cells but also T and NK cells, and is associated with various lymphoid malignancies. The spectrum of EBV-associated lymphoid malignancies is expanding from Burkitt lymphoma to the newly defined systemic EBV+ T cell lymphoproliferative disease of childhood and hydroa vacciniforme-like lymphoma. However, some EBV-associated malignancies are n...
