The EXCYT facility (EXotics with CYclotron and Tandem) at the INFN-LNS is under completion and its commissioning with Li as the first radioactive beam is foreseen by the end of 2004. In the following, we report the work done with an emphasis on the measured yields and production efficiencies for 8, Li

A recently introduced double-base number representation has proved to be successful in improving the performance of several algorithms in cryptography and digital signal processing. The index-calculus version of this number system can be regarded as a two-dimensional extension of the classical logarithmic number system. This paper builds on previous special results by generalizing the number sy...

In Large Neighborhood Search (LNS), a problem is solved by repeatedly exploring (via tree search) a neighborhood of an incumbent solution. Whenever an improving solution is found, this replaces the current incumbent. LNS can improve dramatically the scalability of CP on large real world problems, provided a good neighborhood selection heuristic is available. Unfortunately, designing a neighborh...

Isoaspartyl sites, in which an aspartic acid residue is linked to its C-flanking neighbor via its beta-carboxyl side chain, are generally assumed to be an abnormal modification arising as proteins age. The enzyme protein L-isoaspartate methyltransferase (PIMT), present in many bacteria, plants, and animals, catalyzes the conversion of isoaspartate to normal alpha-linked aspartyl bonds and is th...

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterium that resides in an acidified phagolysosome and has a remarkable ability to persist in the extracellular environment. C. burnetii has evolved a developmental cycle that includes at least two morphologic forms, designated large cell variants (LCV) and small cell variants (SCV). Based on differential protein expression, distinct ultrastructu...

Membrane filters (0.22-microns pore size) were colonized with 10(4) CFU of logarithmic-phase bacteria per filter under laminar flow conditions in a Modified Robbins Device. Colonized filters were then placed upon agar dilution plates for MIC determinations. Subsequently, filters were transferred to control plates and incubated to obtain MBCs.

Wave catastrophes are characterized by logarithmic phase singularities. Examples are light at the horizon of a black hole, sound in transsonic fluids, waves in accelerated frames, light in singular dielectrics and slow light close to a zero of the group velocity. We show that the wave amplitude grows with a half-integer power for monodirectional and symmetric wave catastrophes.

When ratios of the major polypeptides of the outer membrane isolated from cells of Escherichia coli B grown in minimal medium containing either a single amino acid or several amino acids were compared, no difference was observed. However, the ratio of these polypeptides in outer membrane material released into the medium during logarithmic phase growth on these two media was markedly different.
