Lithium influx into human erythrocytes increased 12-fold, when chloride was replaced with bicarbonate in a 150 mM lithium medium (38 degrees C. pH 7.4). The increase was linearly related to both lithium- and bicarbonate concentration, and was completely eliminated by the amino reagent 4, 4'- diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS). DIDS binds to an integral membrane protein (mol wt a...

Lithium, a drug frequently used for treatment of affective disorders, is known to cause a vasopressin resistant state, leading to polyuria and polydipsia. It has been suggested that lithium interacts with the renal V2-vasopressin receptor and makes the receptor dysfunctional. Detailed studies on the influence of lithium on the AVP receptor, however, have so far been difficult due to the lack of...

In this study we investigated the chemical-physical properties of mixtures containing the protic ionic liquid (PIL) N-butyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PYRH4TFSI), propylene carbonate (PC) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in view of their use as electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). We showed that these electrolytic solutions might display c...

Aggression is psychological and social menace. The safety of the patient as well as other members of the society is jeopardised due to severe acts of aggression. Hence control of aggressive behaviour gets a priority over various other symptoms. Various treatment modalities have been tried to control the act of aggression. We carried out this study to find out antiaggressive effect of lithium ca...

In a 6 month prospective randomized open trial addition of 400 mgs. of carbamazepine per day to lithium carbonate was assessed. Although statistically non-significant, the trends suggest that use of carbamazepine hastens recovery and leads to less frequent use of emergency sedation without any increase in side effects.

Transplanted neural stem and progenitor cells (NSCs) produce mostly astrocytes in injured spinal cords. Lithium stimulates neurogenesis by inhibiting GSK3b (glycogen synthetase kinase 3-beta) and increasing WNT/beta catenin. Lithium suppresses astrogliogenesis but the mechanisms were unclear. We cultured NSCs from subventricular zone of neonatal rats and showed that lithium reduced NSC producti...

A case of severe lithium carbonate self-poisoning is described, presenting with a very high serum lithium level (14.6 mmol/L) on admission. Lengthy and repeated hemodialyses were required to lower lithemia to nontoxic ranges. As is usually reported, our patient had prolonged neurologic manifestations (coma, hyperreflexia, fluctuating focal signs) and developed hypotension, cardiovascular collap...

A new synthesis approach has been developed to control the morphology of Mn- and Ni-containing carbonate precursors. Through a controlled release of the precipitate, the carbonate precursors form in a "non-classical crystallization" process similar to the natural crystallization of CaCO3, resulting in shapes tunable from microcubes to microspheres. The oriented attachment in the mesocrystal pre...

This comparative work studies the self-enforcing heterogeneity of lithium deposition and dissolution as the cause for dendrite formation on the lithium metal anode in various liquid organic solvent based electrolytes. In addition, the ongoing lithium corrosion, its rate and thus the passivating quality of the SEI are investigated in self-discharge measurements. The behavior of the lithium anode...
