This article explains the need of high quality large lexicons describing syntactic properties of a natural language in order to accomplish various natural language processing tasks. Data sources useful to collect such lexicons for Czech are described and it is documented that the available treebank data are not a sufficient source. An approach to building such lexicons with the help of an autom...

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the research on linguistic patterns focusing on the subclassOf relation for the semi-automatic construction of ontologies. Taking as a starting point those ontological structures corresponding to consensual modelling solutions, which are known as Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs), we identified the linguistic patterns that convey the relation captured in ...

In this paper we present a new method of automatic acquisition of linguistic patterns for Information Extraction, as implemented in the CICERO system. Our approach combines lexico-semantic information available from the WordNet database with collocating data extracted from training corpora. Due to the open-domain nature of the WordNet information and the immediate availability of large collecti...

Given a semantic relation, the automatic extraction of linguistic patterns that express that relation is a rather difficult problem. This paper presents a semi-automatic method of discovering generally applicable lexico-syntactic patterns that refer to the causal relation. The patterns are found automatically, but their validation is done semi-automatically.

We present a linguistic analysis of a set of English and Spanish verb+noun combinations (VNCs), and a method to use this information to improve VNC identification. Firstly, a sample of frequent VNCs are analysed in-depth and tagged along lexico-semantic and morphosyntactic dimensions, obtaining satisfactory inter-annotator agreement scores. Then, a VNC identification experiment is undertaken, w...

Historically, causal markers, syntactic structures and connectives have been the sole identifying features for automatically extracting causal relations in natural language discourse. However various connectives such as “and”, prepositions such as “as” and other syntactic structures are highly ambiguous in nature, and it is clear that one cannot solely rely on lexico-syntactic markers for detec...

In this paper, we present a two-stage approach to acquire Japanese unknown morphemes from text with full POS tags assigned to them. We first acquire unknown morphemes only making a morphologylevel distinction, and then apply semantic classification to acquired nouns. One advantage of this approach is that, at the second stage, we can exploit syntactic clues in addition to morphological ones bec...

This study reports on an experiment that analyzes a variety of entailment evaluations provided by a lexico-syntactic tool, the Entailer. The environment for these analyses is from a corpus of self-explanations taken from the Intelligent Tutoring System, iSTART. The purpose of this study is to examine how evaluations of hand-coded entailment, paraphrase, and elaboration compare to various evalua...

We present DIALEX, an inheritance-based tool that facilitates the rapid construction of linguistic knowledge bases. Simple lexical entries are added to an application-specific DATR lexicon that inherits morphosyntactic, syntactic, and lexico-semantic constraints from an applicationindependent set of structured base definitions. A lexicon generator expands the DATR lexicon out into a disjunctive...
