Rabbits fed a wheat starch/casein diet develop a marked hypercholesterolemia accompanied by a decrease in the number of EDTA-sensitive binding sites on plasma membrane fractions of the liver for low density lipoproteins (LDL) and 13migrating very low density lipoproteins [Chao, Y.-S., Yamin, T.T. & Alberts, A. W. (1982)J. BioL Chem., in press]. Inclusion of 1% cholestyramine resin in this diet ...

OBJECTIVE Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, and atherosclerosis. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) participates in the cross talk between inflammation and insulin resistance, being activated by both lipopolysaccharide and saturated fatty acids. The present study was undertaken to determine whether TLR4 deficiency has a protective role in inflammation, insu...

Lovastatin therapy is known to induce hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor mRNA and LDL receptor activity. Yet, in studies in humans and animals it has been difficult to demonstrate an enhancement of the plasma fractional catabolic rate (FCR) of an injected LDL tracer during lovastatin therapy. One explanation may be that the composition of the LDL tracer may also change during therap...

Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) receptor is a member of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor family. It binds triglyceride rich lipoprotein (TGRL) but not LDL, because it recognizes apolipoprotein (apo)E only but not apoB. The VLDL receptor functions as a peripheral lipoprotein receptor in concert with lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in heart, muscle, adipose tissue and macrophages. In contr...

We have previously shown that in Hep G2 cells and human hepatocytes, as compared with fibroblasts, the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor activity is only weakly down-regulated after incubation of the cells with LDL, whereas incubation with high-density lipoproteins (HDL) of density 1.16-1.20 g/ml (heavy HDL) strongly increased the LDL-receptor activity. To elucidate this difference between...

We examined the simultaneous uptake of porphyrin and (LDL) by four established cell lines of glioma and normal fibroblasts using flow cytometry (FCM). The results indicated porphyrin and LDL showed competitive conjugation with the LDL receptor. These results support the theory of the porphyrin uptake via the LDL receptor.

These studies were undertaken to investigate the mechanisms involved in the regulation of hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL) transport by n-3 fatty acids in the hamster and rat. Animals were fed n-3 or n-6 fatty acids with a cholesterol-free, very-low-fat semisynthetic diet, or with a diet enriched with cholesterol and saturated fat. Although the enrichment of liver lipids with dietary n-3 f...

The concentration of cholesterol in the low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) fraction of plasma is one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease. Steady-state concentrations of LDL cholesterol in the plasma are determined primarily by the production rate and the rate of removal of LDL cholesterol from the circulation by receptor-dependent transport. The magnitude of these two processes is a...

Cholesteryl ester–filled macrophages are the hallmark of atherosclerotic lesions. Unraveling the pathways responsible for lipid accumulation in macrophages has been viewed as an important aspect for understanding a piece of the atherosclerotic process.1 Investigations into the mechanisms through which macrophages accumulate cholesteryl esters from lipoproteins have delineated the involvement of...
