Recent developments in high-power laser technology allowing for laser intensities from 10 22 W/cm 2 up to 10 24 W/cm 2 have opened up the study of the super-intense laser acceleration of electrons to tens of GeV energies. These intensities may be attainable in the next generation of super-powerful lasers such as EP-OPAL, a proposed extension of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics OMEGA EP Laser...
We generated tunable far-infrared radiation by mixing CO(2) -laser,(15)NH(3) -laser, and microwave radiations in a W-Co metal-insulator-metal diode. We used this far-infrared radiation to measure accurately the torsion-rotation transitions of CH(3)OH in the 6-8-THz region.
Analyses of high foot implosions show that performance is limited by the radiation drive environment, i.e., the hohlraum. Reported here are significant improvements in the radiation environment, which result in an enhancement in implosion performance. Using a longer, larger case-to-capsule ratio hohlraum at lower gas fill density improves the symmetry control of a high foot implosion. Moreover,...
The thermodynamics of laser cooling of solids is analyzed. Using the general theory of radiation entropy, the important roles of the optical frequency and the photon distribution function in determining the radiation entropy are identified. The usefulness of a narrow-band approximation is established for a wide range of radiant sources. This approximation is then applied to compare the entropie...
Structural proteins such as collagen and elastin are known to generate second harmonic at high laser intensities. Second and third harmonic generations (SHG, THG) of 0.4 ps Ti-Sapphire laser radiation at 800 nm were observed in various biological tissues. Dependence of SHG on laser pulse energy and pulse width was investigated. Reflected second harmonic yield was measured for animal tissue in v...
The article focuses on photon drag effect under laser radiation in solid state materials. This effect causes a high concentration of nonequilibrium electrons in the area of the laser beam the exit out of material. Coulomb interaction of spatial charge of these electrons with the charged impurity atoms can cause their drift in the direction of laser radiation. The photon drag effect can be used ...
Recurrent malignant glioma continues to be a clinical challenge, and repeat surgery is an option in only select patients. Stereotactic laser ablation, a new minimally invasive technique, can be used as an alternative to surgery. We review the current literature on laser ablation for recurrent malignant gliomas as well as discuss practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages of this eme...
We investigated the role of excitation laser wavelength on plasma generation and the expansion and confinement of ablation plumes at early times (0–500 ns) in the presence of atmospheric pressure. Fundamental, second, and fourth harmonic radiation from Nd:YAG laser was focused on Al target to produce plasma. Shadowgraphy, fast photography, and optical emission spectroscopy were employed to anal...
This paper briefly reviews the authors' experimental and clinical use of lasers over a 20-year period, during which laser effects on 15 biological systems were studied. Low-energy laser radiation was found to have a stimulating effect on cells, and high-energy radiation had an inhibiting effect. The application of lasers to stimulate wound healing in cases of nonhealing ulcers is recommended.
We propose a new method of detecting radiation reaction effects in the motion of particles subjected to laser pulses of moderate intensity and long duration. The effect becomes sizable for particles that gain almost no energy through the interaction with the laser pulse. Hence, there are regions of parameter space in which radiation reaction is actually the dominant influence on charged particl...
