The polar Kerr effect in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 was measured with high precision using a Sagnac interferometer with a zero-area Sagnac loop. We observed nonzero Kerr rotations as big as 65 nanorad appearing below Tc in large domains. Our results imply a broken time-reversal symmetry state in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4, similar to 3He-A.

Numerical simulations were performed for the formation process of rotating black holes. It is suggested that Kerr black holes are formed for wide ranges of initial parameters. The nature of gravitational waves from a test particle falling into a Kerr black hole as well as the development of 3D numerical relativity for the coalescing binary neutron stars are discussed.

We report the measurement of Kerr nonlinearity of thin films of GaN by using the eclipsing Z-scan technique. The measurement was performed using 100 fs pulses at 800 nm. We measured a pure refractive signal, whose associated nonlinear Kerr coefficient was n2 = (−7.3 ± 0.4)× 10−14 cm2 W−1.

We present a simple proof, using the conservation equations, that any quantum stress tensor on Kerr space-time which is isotropic in a frame which rotates rigidly with the angular velocity of the event horizon must be divergent at the velocity of light surface. We comment on our result in the light of the absence of a ‘true Hartle-Hawking’ vacuum for Kerr.

We predict a strong effective Kerr nonlinearity in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with a Raman active gas which exceeds the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity by 2 orders of magnitude. Two-color bright-bright and dark-bright solitons supported by this nonlinearity are found and the feasibility of their experimental observation is demonstrated.
