BACKGROUND Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a new treatment approach for early stage breast cancer. This study reports on the effects of IORT on radiation-related quality of life (QoL) parameters. METHODS Two hundred and thirty women with stage I-III breast cancer (age, 31 to 84 years) were entered into the study. A single-center subgroup of 87 women from the two arms of the randomized p...
We present the case of an 83 year old woman with a cardiac pacemaker located close in distance to a subsequently diagnosed invasive ductal carcinoma of the left breast. Short range intraoperative radiotherapy was given following wide local excision and sentinel node biopsy. The challenges of using ionising radiation with pacemakers is also discussed.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Relapse-free survival in patients with sulcus superior tumors. DESIGN Prospective registration study. SETTING Department of surgical oncology of a university hospital. PATIENTS Twenty-one patients treated with preoperative radiotherapy (46 Gy), lobectomy and chest-wall resection, and intraoperative radiotherapy (10 Gy). RESULTS After a median follow-up of 18 months, 18 ...
Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a relatively new technique in which irradiation with electrons is performed during an open surgery procedure. This approach poses significant problems in obtaining accurate dosimetry, since neither the pre- nor the postoperative patient images actually matches the irradiation field. Our objective was to implement a software tool able to provide an estimate ...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate complications and sequelae of maxillary removal and reinsertion for anterior cranial base tumors. DESIGN A retrospective review of patients who underwent maxillary removal and reinsertion from 1990 to 1996. SETTING The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at The Ohio State University, Columbus. PATIENTS A consecutive sample of 46 patients who underw...
The term IORT (intraoperative radiotherapy) is currently used for various techniques that show huge differences in dose delivery and coverage of the tissue at risk. The largest evidence for boost IORT preceding whole breast irradiation (WBI) originates from intraoperative electron treatments (IOERT) with single doses around 10 Gy. At median follow-up periods at 6 years, outstandingly low local ...
Abstract Objectives Radiation‐induced rhinosinusitis is a vital dose‐limiting reaction in patients with head and neck malignancy. Unlike oral mucositis during or after radiotherapy, radiation‐induced sinusitis easily overlooked clinical practice rarely included experimental studies. Herein, we review the literature to date on rhinosinusitis. Methods Relevant studies published between 1995 2022 ...
BACKGROUND For patients with sarcomas, radiotherapy can be used as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, or primary local therapy, depending on the site and type of sarcoma, the surgical approach, and the efficacy of chemotherapy. METHODS The authors review the current status of advanced technology radiation therapy in the management of bone and soft tissue sarcoma. RESULTS Advances in radiotherapy have r...
