Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis JCM5805 has been shown to be a rare lactic acid bacterium that can activate plasmacytoid dendritic cells in both murine and human species. In this study, we carried out a randomised placebo-controlled double-blind experiment to evaluate its effect on the pathogenesis of influenza-like illness during the winter season. A total of 213 volunteers were divided into tw...

and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Objective To explore the relationship between influenza-like illness observed by influenza outpatient network and winter holiday breaks in US. Introduction Decreasing contact between infectious and susceptible people in community settings may reduce influenza transmission. Examining the temporal relationship between t...

BACKGROUND In response to the potential threat of an influenza pandemic, several international institutions and governments, in partnership with African countries, invested in the development of epidemiologic and laboratory influenza surveillance capacity in Africa and the African Network of Influenza Surveillance and Epidemiology (ANISE) was formed. METHODS We used a standardized form to col...

During the 2014-15 influenza season, 13/168 respiratory samples from students with influenza-like illness (ILI) at a college in New York, USA, were positive for human adenovirus (HAdV); 4/13 samples were positive for HAdV-B14p1. During influenza season, HAdV should be included in the differential diagnostic panel used to determine the etiology of ILI.

Here, we sequenced 10 influenza A(H3N2) virus genomes isolated from Finnish patients diagnosed with flu-like illness during the 2012-2013 influenza season. The alignment showed a high number of amino acid substitutions (238 in total) in only 10 samples, proving that a high mutation rate exists in seasonal influenza A viruses.

OBJECTIVE To assess the magnitude and severity of the 2012 influenza season in Victoria, Australia using surveillance data from five sources. METHODS Data from influenza notifications, sentinel general practices, a sentinel hospital network, a sentinel locum service and strain typing databases for 2012 were descriptively analysed. RESULTS Influenza and influenza-like illness activity was mo...

Methods Data from August 2009 to December 2010 were collected. In high-risk patients and those with moderate to severe influenza-like illness (ILI), diagnosis of influenza A and pandemic (H1N1) influenza were confirmed by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) by Roche LightCycler 2.0 system. Seven RIDTs were used and results were compared with rRT-PCR to assess per...

The Quidel Sofia Influenza A+B Fluorescent Immunoassay was used to test nasal swab specimens from patients with influenza-like illness at US-Mexico border-area clinics in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 influenza seasons. Compared with real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, the overall sensitivities and specificities were 83% and 81%, and 62% and 93%, respectively.

We compared the accuracy of online data obtained from the Flutracking surveillance system during pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in Australia with data from other influenza surveillance systems. Flutracking accurately identified peak influenza activity timing and community influenza-like illness activity and was significantly less biased by treatment-seeking behavior and laboratory testing protocols than ...

Acute outbreaks of respiratory disease in swine at agricultural fairs in Michigan, USA, in 2015 raised concern for potential human exposure to influenza A virus. Testing ruled out influenza A virus and identified porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus as the cause of influenza-like illness in the affected swine.
