Saltwater intrusion is an ideal target for mapping with airborne electromagnetic techniques because of the high electrical conductivity of saline water and its contrast with that of freshwater. Using electromagnetic sensors to measure the electromagnetic response of the ground at several frequencies, information from various depths is obtained. The electromagnetic response is then converted to ...
With the increasing improvement of national ecological standards, eco-environmental problems caused by super thick coal seam mining in western China are becoming more and serious. The failure law weak overburden stratum is an important factor affecting safe coal. characteristics weakly cemented under high-intensity area were studied. For this purpose, a case study was conducted 1101 working fac...
Head measurements at a single observation well during a cross-hole pumping test carry a great amount of information about aquifer heterogeneity other than the average property of the aquifer as implied in Theis analysis of aquifer test. In this commentary, we use simple examples and a probabilistic reasoning approach based on Darcy’s law to unravel this information, buried in the results of qua...
Background and Objective: There are major mobile and non-mobile pollution sources due to human activities that can influence aquifers and reduce groundwater quality. Vulnerability assessment is an inexpensive procedure in to identify areas prone to the pollutants. Identification of these sources is essential in water resources management. Mahidasht Plain is one of the important regions of Kerma...
The recession flow analysis of Brutsaert and Nieber [1977] extended by Troch et al. [1993] to estimate aquifer parameters (saturated hydraulic conductivity and mean aquifer depth) is examined by means of a numerical model. It is found to be reliable for the estimation of the catchment-scale saturated hydraulic conductivity and mean aquifer depth. Increasing the complexity of the synthetic water...
We report on the metagenome of a deep subsurface aquifer in the Tomsk region of Russia, sampled via an oil exploration borehole drilled to a depth of 2.8 km. Methanogenic archaea were present in the water along with members of various bacterial phyla, including Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Ignavibacteriae, and uncultured candidate divisions.
ArcGIS Desktop* and ArcGIS Workstation* were used to extract statistically significant information from various geospatial data sets for input into a statistical model of groundwater vulnerability. The product of this effort was a probability map that identified areas of vulnerability to groundwater-quality degradation. This information is of interest to a variety of water professionals because...
TRACERS IN GROUNDWATER: USE OF MICROORGANISMS AND MICROSPHERES bacteriophages (bacteria-specific viruses), often referred to simply as phages, were employed widely as tracers in groundwater applications. A modest number of phage tracer experiments involving groundwater systems were conducted in the 1970s and 1980s. Most notable were transport studies involving the use of an Aerobacter aerogenes...
Abstract Overpumping or overexploitation of groundwater is one the major threats for aquifer systems in arid and semi-arid areas. Managed recharge (MAR) has been suggested by many researchers as a sustainable effective method to alleviate negative impacts overpumping. Optimizing artificial considers selection suitable MAR sites terms surface subsurface characteristics. While characteristics at ...
