Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) fibers are single-celled seed coat hairs that elongate up to 2mm per day during a phase of rapid growth. Recent evidence suggests this growth is orchestrated by a series of events which includes temporary closure of plasmodesmata.
A semi-selective agar medium was developed for detection of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. malvacearum (Xam) in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) seed. The basic medium was peptone-sucrose-agar (PSA). Criteria for the semi-selective medium were the typical colony characters of Xam and its pathogenicity on cotton. Several systemic fungicides and antibiotics in different concentrations were tested alone or...
In this study, 40 phospholipase D (PLD) genes were identified from allotetraploid cotton Gossypium hirsutum, and 20 PLD genes were examined in diploid cotton Gossypium raimondii. Combining with 19 previously identified Gossypium arboreum PLD genes, a comparative analysis was performed among the PLD gene families among allotetraploid and two diploid cottons. Based on the orthologous relationship...
Experiments show that the rate of water uptake by living tissues external to mature xylem of cotton stems (Gossypium hirsutum L. Auburn 7-683) is very similar to the corresponding curves for leaf tissue. In both cases one obtains a two-phase curve with phase I corresponding to passive rehydration and phase II pertaining to active growth.A theory of water movement in plant tissue first proposed ...
Alternate-1 and alternate-2 orientation of chromosomes, as well as the two types of adjacent orientation, were observed cytologically in the ring configurations of three reciprocal translocation heterozygotes of Gossypium hirsutum L. The observations indicate that the two types of alternate orientation should be characteristic of ring-forming translocations.
