This paper explores the annotation and classification of students’ revision behaviors in argumentative writing. A sentence-level revision schema is proposed to capture why and how students make revisions. Based on the proposed schema, a small corpus of student essays and revisions was annotated. Studies show that manual annotation is reliable with the schema and the annotated information helpfu...

In this work we show how Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension, a fundamental result in statistical learning theory, can be used to evaluate the selectivity (output cardinality) of SQL queries, a core problem in large database management. The major theoretical contribution of this work, which is of independent interest, is an explicit bound to the VC-dimension of a range space defined by all possi...

Interesting data often concentrate on low dimensional smooth manifolds inside a high dimensional ambient space. Random projections are a simple, powerful tool for dimensionality reduction of such data. Previous works have studied bounds on how many projections are needed to accurately preserve the geometry of these manifolds, given their intrinsic dimensionality, volume and curvature. However, ...

Texture is an important visual attribute used to describe the pixel organization in an image. As well as it being easily identified by humans, its analysis process demands a high level of sophistication and computer complexity. This paper presents a novel approach for texture analysis, based on analyzing the complexity of the surface generated from a texture, in order to describe and characteri...

Clustering in high-dimensional spaces is a difficult problem which is recurrent in many domains, for example in image analysis. The difficulty is due to the fact that highdimensional data usually live in different low-dimensional subspaces hidden in the original space. This paper presents a family of Gaussian mixture models designed for highdimensional data which combine the ideas of subspace c...

Music is a form of communication that relies on highly structured temporal sequences comparable in complexity to language. Music is found among all human cultures, and musical languages vary across cultures with learning. Tonality – a set of stability and attraction relationships perceived among musical frequencies – is a universal feature of music, found in virtually every musical culture. In ...

This paper describes the results of the first computational investigation of characteristic visual complexity in the architecture of Peter Eisenman. The research uses a variation of the “box-counting” approach to determining a quantitative value of the formal complexity present in five of Eisenman’s early domestic works (Houses I, II, III, IV and VI all of which were completed between 1968 and ...

The fractal dimension of high resolution Hinode solar granulation observations and numerical simulations is studied and the results are compared. These observations are not influenced by atmospheric seeing conditions and therefore allow a more realistic estimate of the fractal dimension than in previous works. Though arriving at similar results for observations and simulation data, non integer ...

We demonstrate the feasibility of uncovering supermassive black holes in late-type, “quiescent” spiral galaxies by detecting signs of very low-level nuclear activity. We use a combination of x-ray selection and multi-wavelength follow-up. Here, we apply this technique to NGC 3184 and NGC 5457, both of type Scd, and show that strong arguments can be made that both host AGNs.

In terms of quality control and for all quantitative analysis peak purity is a major task, which can be addressed in different ways. Often only peak shapes and chromatograms are taken into consideration but a very elegant possibility without the need to use a mass spectrometric detector is the comparison of spectra recorded with a diode-array detector during the registration of a chromatographi...
