Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare, often fatal, autosomal recessive disorder in which albinism, bleeding and lysosomal storage are associated with defects of diverse cytoplasmic organelles, including melanosomes, platelet dense granules and lysosomes. Similar multi-organellar defects occur in the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS), as well as in a large number of different mouse mutants. Th...

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) occurs in most infections with Sin Nombre virus and other North American hantaviruses. We report five cases of acute hantavirus infection that did not fit the HPS case definition. The patients had characteristic prodromal symptoms without severe pulmonary involvement. These cases suggest that surveillance for HPS may need to be expanded.

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a life-threatening clinical syndrome that has various presentations, shows rapid progression and is associated with a high mortality. Clinical reports about pulmonary tuberculosis combined with respiratory failure accompanied by HPS are rare.HPS has no special clinical manifestations, and the main presentations include persistent fever, hepatosplenomegaly, hemat...

Hepatopulmonary syndrome is a severe complication of chronic liver diseases, significantly reducing the quality and duration patient’s lives, pathogenetic manifestation which hypoxemia intrapulmonary vasodilation. The disease widespread enough: according to some authors, up 35 % patients with terminal stage damage suffer from this syndrome. main clinical progressive dyspnea possible occurrence ...

During hepatopulmonary syndrome caused by liver cirrhosis, pulmonary endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) expression and NO production are increased. Increased NO contributes to the blunted hypoxic pressor response (HPR) during cirrhosis and may induce heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression and carbon monoxide (CO) production, exacerbating the blunted HPR. We hypothesized that NO regulates ...

Hantaviruses are the causative agents of the zoonotic diseases known as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the Americas. These pathogens are maintained in the wild by rodent reservoirs and are mainly transmitted via the aerosol route. The infection is chronic and apparently asymptomatic in host animals. Whilst HFRS is cau...

Andes virus (ANDV) is associated with a lethal vascular leak syndrome in humans termed hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). In hamsters, ANDV causes a respiratory distress syndrome closely resembling human HPS. The mechanism for the massive vascular leakage associated with HPS is poorly understood; however, T cell immunopathology has been implicated on the basis of circumstantial and corollary ...
