Selection of antigens for therapeutic vaccination against chronic viral infections is complicated by pathogen genetic variations. We tested whether antigens present during persistent viral infections could provide a personalized antigenic reservoir for therapeutic T cell expansion in humans. We focused our study on the HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), which is present in microgram quantities in the...
BACKGROUND Preventing and managing hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important public health issue worldwide, and Taiwan is one of the countries where viral hepatitis is most endemic. Previous studies have shown that patients with serious mental illnesses have a higher risk for hepatitis infection. We investigated the prevalence of HBV and HCV among institution...
The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen was significantly higher in urban (12.9%) than in rural (7.6%) populations (P = 0.003), but no difference was found in the prevalence of hepatitis delta virus (HDV), which was high in both populations. Phylogenetic analysis showed the circulation of HBV-A3 and -E genotypes and the presence of HDV-1, HDV-7, and HDV-8 clades.
Screening with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is highly recommended for at-risk individuals. Mutations in the HBsAg can result in an inability to detect the virus during routine screening. We describe a hemodialysis patient found to have high levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA and HBV antibody but negative HBsAg on two routine assays.
We describe 2 patients who were initially positive for antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen and who experienced a strong and sudden increase of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We found that reactivation of HBV replication during HAART can occur independently of lamivudine resistance or withdrawal of lamivudine, and in spite of increa...
BACKGROUND Treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) suppresses hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA production but does not affect the synthesis of the RNA pregenome or HBV messenger RNA. Whether HBV RNA-containing particles continue to be secreted into the bloodstream remains controversial. METHODS We developed a sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR)...
results hepatitis b surface antigen (hbsag) was found in 122/3000 (4.1%) prisoners. hepatitis b e antigen (hbeag), anti-hiv, anti-hcv and anti-hiv/anti-hcv were detected in 52/122 (42.6%), 12/122 (10%), 22/122 (18%) and 3/122 (2.4%) prisoners, respectively. the hbv-dna was found in 115/122 (94.3%) prisoners. the most high risk behavior was to utilize the collaborative syringe by injecting drug ...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Pre-existing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been associated in inferior renal transplant outcomes. We examined outcomes of HBV+ renal recipients in a more recent era with availability of oral anti-viral agents. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS Using the Organ Procurement Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing database, we selected adu...
BACKGROUND The role of MCP1-2518 A/G in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is controversial. Our aim was to evaluate the frequency distribution of MCP1-2518 A/G (rs1024611) polymorphic variants in hemodialysis (HD) patients without or with type 2 diabetes in relation to serological markers of HBV infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS HD patients (n=170, 48 with diagnosis of type 2 diabetes), who tes...
Background and Aim: Globally, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major health issue contributing to various diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) liver cirrhosis. Virus replication complex interaction with host immune system response causes dynamic interplay leading HBV infection. In developing countries, plays significant role in higher rates of morbidities mortalities. The prese...
