BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease is a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity worldwide, and the number of people who require dialysis or transplantation continues to increase. People on dialysis are 15 times more likely to die than the general population. Dialysis is also costly, intrusive, and time-consuming and imposes an enormous burden on patients and their families. This escal...
Dear Sir, We read with interest the comprehensive review of renal and extrarenal findings in haemodialysis patients by Degrassi et al., recently published in Insights into Imaging [1]. In this paper, the authors comprehensively describe acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) and renal tumours in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) plus musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and miscellaneous extrarenal comp...
BACKGROUND The use of acetate in haemodialysis fluids may induce negative effects in patients including nausea and increased inflammation. Therefore, haemodialysis fluids where acetate is substituted with citrate have recently been developed. In this study, we investigated the biocompatibility of citrate employing concentrations used in haemodialysis. METHODS The effects of citrate and acetat...
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in Pakistani population and their influence is considerable in patients suffering from kidney diseases and undergoing dialysis (Haemodialysis/ Peritoneal). This study considered the total number of dialysis a patient received and the number of dialysis in a week with the chances of Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B infection....
BACKGROUND Haemodialysis is the primary mode of renal replacement therapy for patients of end stage renal disease. The most important determinant for effective haemodialysis is a reliable vascular access. Arterio-venous (AV) fistula is the closest to be an ideal long-term haemodialysis vascular access. The creation of fistulas or grafts is recommended before starting haemodialysis, this study w...
INTRODUCTION Conventional pulsed wave Doppler parameters are known to be preload dependent, whereas newly proposed Doppler indices may be less influenced by variations in loading conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of haemodialysis-induced preload reduction on both conventional and new Doppler parameters for the assessment of left ventricular (LV) diastolic func...
BACKGROUND Starting dialysis in an unplanned manner is a frequent situation in a dialysis centre even for patients with a regular nephrology follow-up. For no clear reason, chronic haemodialysis (HD) is more frequently used than peritoneal dialysis for unplanned dialysis patients. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of a dialysis policy dedicated to unplanned dialy...
BACKGROUND A standardized practical method of post-dialysis blood sampling is required to improve the precision of using urea kinetics in the evaluation of haemodialysis dose and to permit comparative audit. The methods recommended in the Renal Association and Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative (DOQI) guidelines reduce the blood pump speed to a low rate at the end of haemodialysis before bloo...
Ischemic complications presenting as digital gangrene occurring in a patient of end-stage renal disease undergoing haemodialysis is rarely reported in literature. We report one such case of dry gangrene of a single finger in a 53 years old male undergoing haemodialysis. The condition was likely a steal phenomenon secondary to the surgical angioaccess for dialysis.
A survey to assess the degree of occupational and physical rehabilitation was conducted on patients treated on chronic haemodialysis, using the semiquantitative Karnovsky scale. The survey revealed that over 90% of patients achieved good rehabilitation and returned to employment or to household duties. Chronic haemodialysis is effective in prolonging life and most patients were rehabilitated wi...
