14 The elemental (C, N and P) and isotopic (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) content of leaves of the seagrasses 15 Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii, and Syringodium filiforme were measured across a 16 10,000 km 2 survey of the seagrass communities of South Florida in 1999 and 2000. Trends at 17 local and broad spatial scales were compared to examine interspecific variation in the seagrass 18 characteris...

Introduction The enlarged coverage of the international publication and citation databases Web of Science and Scopus towards local media in social sciences was a welcome response to an increased usage of these databases in evaluation and funding systems. The mostly international journals available earlier were the basis for the development of current standard bibliometric indicators. The same i...

Ulam's method of discretising the dynamics of a smooth deterministic system to produce a nite state Markov chain approximation has been in use for over two decades. We review what can be done with the constructions, in the sense of how various dy-namical indicators and behaviour can be numerically extracted.

The Malcolm horizon (Malcolm, et. al., 1975) utilizes a large projected light stimulus (PVHD) as an attitude indicator in order to achieve a more compelling sense of roll than is obtained with smaller devices. The basic principle is that the larger stimulus is more similar to visibility of a real horizon during roll, and does not require fixation and attention to the degree that smaller display...

Aircraft engine manufacturers collect large amount of engine related data during flights. These data are used to detect anomalies in the engines in order to help companies optimize their maintenance costs. This article introduces and studies a generic methodology that allows one to build automatic early signs of anomaly detection in a way that is understandable by human operators who make the f...

Very high resolution satellite images are used to derive the spatial distributions of landscape ecological metrics within suburban areas. These indicators are weighted mean patch size and lacunarity computed from thresholded normalized difference vegetation index obtained from multispectral IKONOS-2 imagery. Spatial distributions of the metrics are derived for an extensive suburban area on the ...

High-resolution functional imaging of neural activity in vivo relies on appropriate labeling methods. In this issue of Neuron, Nagayama et al. introduce a simple procedure for staining subsets of neurons with organic calcium indicator dyes via local electroporation. Neuronal populations are sparsely labeled, preserving the ability to resolve calcium signals in dendrites and synaptic structures.
