Guanidine (G), 1-methylguanidine (MG), and 1,1dimethylguanidine (DMG) have long been implicated as uremic “toxins.’A method has been developed for determining G, MG, and DMG in serum and urine.Specimens were chromatographed on carboxylateresin, with use of 1 molar NaOH, and quantitated colorimetricallywith a modificationof the VogesProskauer reaction. The mean values for G and MG in the serum of ...
When HeLa cells were simultaneously infected with a high multiplicity of poliovirus and a low multiplicity of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), a definite inhibition of NDV growth was observed, while the growth of poliovirus was unaffected. Moreover, under conditions where the multiplication of poliovirus was prevented by guanidine, which is known to inhibit the formation of the ribonucleic acid (...
An efficient computational method has been identified that uses B3LYP density functional theory, IEF-PCM solvation modeling with a modified UFF cavity, and Boltzmann weighting of tautomers to predict the site-specific and global pKa of DNA nucleobases and their oxidation products. The method has been used to evaluate the acidity of guanidinohydantoin (Gh) and spiroiminodihydantoin (Sp), two hig...
We have generated mutator strains of Bacillus anthracis Sterne by using directed gene knockouts to investigate the effect of deleting genes involved in mismatch repair, oxidative repair, and maintaining triphosphate pools. The single-knockout strains are deleted for mutS, mutY, mutM, or ndk. We also made double-knockout strains that are mutS ndk or mutY mutM. We have measured the levels of muta...
Thirty weak base 1,2,4-dispiro trioxolanes (secondary ozonides) were synthesized. Amino amide trioxolanes had the best combination of antimalarial and biopharmaceutical properties. Guanidine, aminoxy, and amino acid trioxolanes had poor antimalarial activity. Lipophilic trioxolanes were less stable metabolically than their more polar counterparts.
A crude methanolic extract of the Indonesian sponge Clathria bulbotoxa showed a potent cytotoxic activity against the human epidermoid carcinoma A431 cells. An investigation of the active components led to the isolation of three new compounds named crambescidins 345 (1), 361 (2), and 373 (3), together with the known related metabolites crambescidins 359 (4), 657 (5), and 800 (6). The structures...
