In this paper we introduce two techniques that can be used together to improve video coding performance. Firstly, block matching motion estimation with spatial transformation (BMST) is used to increase motion compression eeciency, and then motion compensated prediction (MCP) errors are encoded using a hybrid Fractal/DCT scheme. MCP error blocks are classiied according to their energy content an...

An image compression scheme based on the finite-state fractal block coding (FS-FBC) is proposed in this paper. Since the FS algorithm has been successfully employed by the vector quantization (VQ) techniques and there are many similarities between VQ and FBC scheme, we employ the FS algorithm on FBC technique to determine the fractal codes. The next-state functions for the domain pool size, con...

Fractal image compression is a block based technique. The blocks of the underlying image partition are called range blocks. Like all block based techniques, fractal coding suffers from blocking artifacts, in particular at high compression ratios. Moreover, due to the recursive nature of the fractal decoder blocking artifacts also show up in the interior of the range blocks. This paper proposes ...

Fractal-rate behavior is a ubiquitous and important aspect of normal mammalian cochlear-nerve activity, which may well be absent in nerve bers excited by present cochlear prostheses. We propose simple methods for introducing fractal uctuations into a cochlear prosthesis, thus providing the natural statistical character of eighth-nerve ber spike trains. Fractal behavior is ubiquitous in mammalia...

Fractal image and video coders use redundancies present in different scales of natural images for compression. Motion compensation, on the other hand, is a powerful method for exploiting similarities at the same scale in frames of a video sequence. In this paper, a new method is proposed to take advantage of both interscale and intrascale selfsimilarities present in video sequences. A rate-dist...

A new scheme for sequence coding based on the iterated functions systems theory is presented. The method relies on a 3D approach in which the sequence is adaptively partitioned. Each partition block can be coded either by using the spatial self similarities or by exploiting temporal redundancies. The proposed system shows very good performances when compared to other existing methods.

We propose a novel algorithm for fractal video sequence coding, based on the Circular Prediction Mapping (CPM), in which each range block is approximated by a domain block in the circularly previous frame. In our approach, the size of the domain block is set to be same as that of the range block for exploiting the high temporal correlation between the adjacent frames, while most other fractal c...

In this work we present a fractal image compression algorithm for inter/intra-frame video coding. We have shown previously how the Iterated TransformationTheory (ITT ) compression algorithm proposed by Jacquin can be modeled as the solution of a second kind twoscale functional equation. This approach allows us to introduce a chain of functional equations which we use to build a pyramid algorith...

The fractal coding is a novel technique for image compression. Though the technique has many attractive features, the large encoding time makes it unsuitable for real time applications. In this paper, an efficient algorithm for fractal encoding which operates on entire domain image instead of overlapping domain blocks is presented. The algorithm drastically reduces the encoding time as compared ...

The first fully automated fractal image compression algorithm was published by Arnaud Jacquin in 1989. Given an image f , the encoder finds a contractive affine image transformation (fractal transform) T such that the fixed point of T is close to f . The decoding is by iteration of the fractal transform starting from an arbitrary image. Due to the contraction mapping principle, the sequence of ...
