We calculate the friction force between two semi-infinite solids in relative parallel motion (velocity V), and separated by a vacuum gap of width d. The friction force result from coupling via a fluctuating electromagnetic field, and can be considered as the dissipative part of the van der Waals interaction. We consider the dependence of the friction force on the temperature T , and present a d...

We find that in very elongated 3D trapped Bose gases, even at temperatures far below the BEC transition temperature T(c), the equilibrium state will be a 3D condensate with fluctuating phase (quasicondensate). At sufficiently low temperatures the phase fluctuations are suppressed and the quasicondensate turns into a true condensate. The presence of the phase fluctuations allows for extending th...

The light-scattering spectrum for a Maxwell fluid in a steady state due to the presence of an external temperature gradient is computed. In such a fluid heat conduction is assumed to be governed by the classical Fourier law. The calculation is carried out through the use of fluctuating hydrodynamics. The effect of the non-Newtonian character of the fluid in the resulting spectrum is discussed.

The escape rate of a particle over a fluctuating barrier in a double-well potential exhibits resonance at an optimum value of correlation time of fluctuation. This has been shown to be important in several variants of kinetic model of chemical reactions. We extend the analysis of this phenomenon of resonant activation to quantum domain to show how quantization significantly enhances resonant ac...

Herring is an important stock as bait for lobster fisheries and a component of the food web of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. However, herring is very vulnerable to environmental variables such as temperature, food supply, and to the type of sediment on the bottom floor. Egg and larval stage herring are hypothesized to be very sensitive to low temperatures. This paper will analyze the correlatio...

An isosbestic point in the temperature dependence of an absorption spectrum is commonly viewed as a sign of interconverting chemical or structural species. Here I explore an alternative microscopic origin of temperature-independent absorbance in inhomogeneously broadened spectra: While the equilibrium probability of observing a particular frequency generally changes with the magnitude of therma...

Fluctuating Cooper pairs formed by spatially separated electrons and holes are precursors of their equilibrium condensation. Their presence strongly impacts transport phenomena interlayer tunneling in double-layer systems above the transition temperature. Here, we consider a hybrid graphene/quantum-well system focus on dynamics fluctuating conventional Dirac holes. We demonstrate that chiral na...

Arabidopsis adapts to elevated temperature by promoting stem elongation and hyponastic growth through a temperature-responsive transcription factor PIF4. Here we show that the evening-expressed clock component TOC1 interacts with and inactivates PIF4, thereby suppressing thermoresponsive growth in the evening. We find that the expression of PIF4 target genes show circadian rhythms of thermosens...
