We compared the pullout strength of a suture-based anchor versus a bioabsorbable anchor in the distal fibula and calcaneus and evaluated the relationship between bone mineral density and peak load to failure. Eight paired cadaveric specimens underwent a modified Broström procedure and Achilles tendon reattachment. The fibula and calcaneus in the paired specimens received either a suture-based a...
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS To demonstrate that the osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap provides equivalent functional outcomes and improved morbidity compared to the fibular free flap in mandibular reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review. METHODS There were 168 patients requiring free flap reconstruction of segmental mandibular defects between January 2001 and December 2008. Mean fo...
A 47-year-old man underwent surgical resection and reconstruction with a fibula osteocutaneous flap. After the surgery, a surgical obturator was placed and adjusted. After flap healing, a conventional obturator was fabricated with polymethyl methacrylate resin and retained by the anatomical undercuts around the reconstructed fibula bone flap and the posterior part of the defect. As the defect s...
We report four patients with unilateral bowing of the lower leg, affecting only the fibula. The bone is too long with anterolateral curvature of the distal third. Because of its regressive course and the absence of cutaneous involvement, this newly described entity can be distinguished from other forms of bowing of the leg.
We describe a schwannoma located in the mid-diaphyseal region of the fibula of a 14-year-old boy. Radiologically this was an expansile, lytic, globular and trabeculated lesion. MRI showed a narrow transition zone with a break in the cortex and adjacent tissue oedema. Differential diagnosis included schwannoma, fibrous dysplasia, giant cell tumour and aneurysmal bone cyst. The tumour was excised...
A unique combination of external and internal fixation techniques, for a fibular lengthening procedure using the Ilizarov method is described. The technique is minimally invasive, allows precise deformity correction, enables early weight bearing, and minimizes the time that the patient wears the external fixator. Introduction Bone lengthening procedures have, over time, been approached in a var...
Premature physeal closure (PPC) may lead to clinically significant progressive angular deformity or leg length discrepancy. Many variables seem play a role in determining which injuries result PPC. A 8- year-old boy sustained non-displaced fracture of distal tibia and fibula. He showed no signs PPC at 7 months post-injury. Seven years later, his ankle became painful. had developed fibula causin...
Free transfer of the fibula for mandibular reconstruction provides desirable functional and aesthetic results. However, unexpected donor- and recipient-site complications may be encountered with most free flap transfer procedures. A 62-year-old woman underwent wide resection and segmental mandibulectomy for low-grade squamous cell carcinoma of intraoral location. Reconstruction of the defect wa...
Introduction The fibula osteocutaneous flap is now commonly used to reconstruct composite mandibular defects. Difficulties in flap execution are invariably related to the dynamic relationship of the bone orientation and the skin paddle inset. Traditional design has been limited to a single-strut bony design in order to restore mandibular continuity, without restoration of mandibular height and ...
A 72-year-old asian woman who had immigrated from Vietnam 10 years ago presented with a soft tissue mass around the proximal fibula. Conventional radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a destructive lesion of the head of the fibula with an intact superior tibiofibular joint and an abscess surrounding the destroyed bone. Histopathology obtained by a CT-guided needle biopsy revea...
