It is well understood that induction motors draw higher currents during their starting operations than is the case under full load running conditions. Since the early days of induction motor availability, starting methods other than Direct-on-Line have been used, and in some cases mandated by Utilities, to reduce the effect of these high starting currents on the electrical distribution network....

This goal of this study was to find the optimal processing parameters for PET/TiO2 UV-cut fiber in order to work out its maximal strength. UV-cut means PET/TiO2 fiber attenuates the transmission of UV-radiation. The hybrid Taguchi and fuzzy approach was applied to resolve the problem as regards optimization of multiple quality characteristics, and further discover the optimal conditions for PET...

We present an automated and systematic two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-FFT) approach to analyze collagen fiber organization through the use of second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. Average orientations of individual domains and Ising-like order parameters introduced to characterize the correlation between orientations of adjacent domains may be used to quantitatively chara...

A method for detecting sound using a single step-index multimode fiber is presented. The detected signal results from differences in acoustically induced phase shifts between two different waveguide modes propagating in the fiber. The relative sensitivity of this technique compared with a two-path interferometer was experimentally determined and agreed with that calculated using the fiber param...

We present an approach for fiber delivery of femtosecond pulses relying on pulse breakup and soliton self-frequency shift in a custom-made solid-core photonic bandgap fiber. In this scheme, the fiber properties themselves ensure that a powerful Fourier-transform-limited pulse is emitted at the fiber output, hence doing away with the need for complex precompensation and enabling tunability of th...

Reliable quantitative analysis of white matter connectivity in the brain is an open problem in neuroimaging, with common solutions requiring tools for fiber tracking, tractography segmentation and estimation of intersubject correspondence. This paper proposes a novel, template matching approach to the problem. In the proposed method, a deformable fiber-bundle model is aligned directly with the ...

A review of optical fiber hydrogen sensors based on palladium (Pd) is presented. Palladium hydrogen optical fiber sensing systems can be considered as a model for other metal hybrid systems. In addition, the Pd hydrogen systems are well characterized in bulk, cluster, or thin film form. We focus on the fiber principles. We then discuss their performances regarding their configurations. We will ...

In this paper, we propose a new geodesic based algorithm for diffusion tensor fiber tracking. This technique is based on computing multi-valued solutions from the Euler-Lagrange form of the geodesic equations. Compared to other geodesic based approaches, multi-valued solutions at each grid point have been considered other than just computing the viscosity solution. This allows us to compute fib...

Problem statement: The objective of this study is to compare the methods for approximating the positions of twist fiber in yarn structures. Computer Aided Design (CAD) is applied using parametric equation, spline curve and NURBS curve. The ideal twist fiber and fiber migration are studied in 3 dimensions. Approach: The fiber positions in yarn structures were measured by trace fiber technique. T...
