Parker et al. (Reports, 10 March 2006, p. 1459) showed that native herbivores suppress exotic plants more than native plants. Further analysis reveals that the effect of native herbivores is reduced on exotic plant species that are closely related to native species in the invaded region. Exotic plants may share traits with native congeners that confer similar resistance to resident herbivores.
Recent strong experimental evidence of a narrow exotic S = +1 baryon resonance, Θ+, suggests the existence of other exotic baryons. We discuss the prospects of confirming earlier experimental evidence of Θ+ and the observation of additional hypothetical exotic baryons in e+e− annihilations and γγ collisions at LEP and B Factories.
The use of multidisciplinary approaches investigation including biological, biogeographical, historical, morphological, and genetic analysis, can be useful in identifying preserving biodiversity. present study focuses on the characterisation conservation a mouflon population (Ovis gmelini musimon) from Mediterranean island Giglio. Here we provide first molecular data Giglio compare it with mouf...
A fundamental role of the veterinary profession is the protection of human health through wholesome food and control of diseases of animal origin, especially zoonoses. Therefore, training of veterinary students worldwide needs to face the new challenges posed by emerging infections, both from wildlife and domestic animals, as well as risks from bio/agroterrorism. New courses emphasising recogni...
Special Needs for the Exotic Small Mammal and Reptile Patient In general, basic equipment used for dogs and cats can be used on many exotic small mammals and reptiles. Most exotic animal patients tend to be very little; therefore pediatric equipment is a must. It is important to have catheters and needles as small as 26g. Small uncuffed endotracheal tubes should be available, and 18g to 14g IV ...
As a result of examinations, the following species of ticks have been found parasitising on Python regius brought from Africa to Poland: Amblyomma latum, Amblyomma transversale, Amblyomma spp., on Varanus exanthematicus: Amblyomma exornatum, Amblyomma flavomaculatum, Amblyomma latum, Amblyomma nuttalli, Amblyomma spp., on Varanus salvator brought from Indonesia to Poland: Amblyomma varanensis. ...
Comparative psychology is by nature an interdisciplinary science that lies at the crossroads of psychology and biology but also draws from other fields in the natural, social, and cognitive sciences. The study of the psychology of animals has been labeled animal cognition, comparative cognition, animal learning, animal psychology, and animal intelligence. Here, comparative psychology is used in...
The first step in fundamental breeding of any living organism is the determination of its genetic make-up. To investigate the genetic make-up of the European honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) in Iran, some research attempts were made during the years 1992-1996 in which the bee's relationship with some exotic races were determined through the application of morphological methods. For this purpose 130...
Biological soil crusts (BSCs) can improve the stability and health of native plant communities in arid ecosystems. However, it is unknown whether BSCs can also inhibit invasions of exotic vascular plants on stabilized reclaimed sand dunes. To answer this question, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to test the effects of cyanobacteria-dominated BSCs on 1) seed germination and biomass of an ex...
