Electronic spectra are reported for two ring-substituted benzyl-like radicals, 3-picolyl and 2, 5-lutidyl. These pyridine-based radicals have much shorter excited state (D1) lifetimes than their benzyl radical prototypes. The 3-picolyl radical (3-(ĊH2)C5H4N) has an excited-state D1 lifetime of ∼9 ns, and the 2,5-lutidyl radical (2-(CH3),5-(ĊH2)C5H3N) has an excited-state D1 lifetime of ∼245 ns....

The photophysical properties of the natural pigment violacein extracted from an Antarctic organism adapted to high exposure levels of UV radiation were measured in a combined steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic study for the first time. In the low-viscosity solvents methanol and acetone, violacein exhibits low fluorescence quantum yields on the order of 1 × 10-4, and femtosecond transi...

We present a time-dependent (TD) linear-response description of excited electronic states within the framework of embedded mean-field theory (EMFT). TD-EMFT allows for subsystems to be described at different mean-field levels of theory, enabling straightforward treatment of excited states and transition properties. We provide benchmark demonstrations of TD-EMFT for both local and nonlocal excit...

Attosecond spectroscopic techniques have made it possible to measure differences in transport times for photoelectrons from localized core levels and delocalized valence bands in solids. We report the application of attosecond pulse trains to directly and unambiguously measure the difference in lifetimes between photoelectrons born into free electron-like states and those excited into unoccupie...

Excited state angular momentum alignment – orientation conversion for atoms with hyperfine structure in presence of an external magnetic field is investigated. Transversal orientation in these conditions is reported for the first time. This phenomenon occurs under Paschen Back conditions at intermediate magnetic field strength. Weak radiation from a linearly polarized diode laser is used to exc...

A kinetic model to predict the relative intensities of the atomic C/H/N/O emission lines in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been developed for organic compounds. The model includes a comprehensive set of chemical processes involving both neutral and ionic chemistry and physical excitation and de-excitation of atomic levels affecting the neutral, ionic, and excited-state species ...

The vagal afferent system is strategically positioned to mediate rapid changes in motility and satiety in response to systemic glucose levels. In the present study we aimed to identify glucose-excited and glucose-inhibited neurons in nodose ganglia and characterize their glucose-sensing properties. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in vagal afferent neurons isolated from rat nodose ganglia demo...

atmospheric pressure plasma (app) is an emerging non thermal technology for the improvement of food  safety. non-thermal plasma (ntp) is a neutral ionized gas that comprises highly reactive spices including, positive ions, negative ions, free radicals, electrons, excited or non excited molecules and photons at or near room temperature. ntp can be generated at atmospheric pressure that makes it ...

1.1 Fluorescence phenomenon The absorption and subsequent emission of light by organic and inorganic specimens is typically the result of physical phenomena known as luminescence, which occurs at electronically excited states. Luminescence is formally divided into two categories: fluorescence and phosphorescence, depending on the nature of the excited state. Fluorescence occurs when a photon ex...

Solvent-induced excited-state configuration mixing in a Pt(II) diimine chromophore with phenylene ethynylene containing acetylide ligands, [Pt((t)Bu2bpy)(PE3)2] (1), was characterized by nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and transient dc photoconductivity (TDCP). The mixing is a result of closely spaced triplet charge transfer (3CT) and intraligand-localized (3IL) triplet energy leve...
