A nanostructured biocatalytic interface reversibly gating electrochemical reactions upon chemical signals processed by immobilized enzymes was architectured. The chemical signals were converted to local interfacial pH changes causing restructuring of the stimuli-responsive polymer and switching ON-OFF the electrochemical reaction.

Characterization of eight restriction endonucleases isolated from five strains of Herpetosiphon giganteus is described. HgiCI from strain Hpg9 recognizes and cleaves the degenerate sequence: GGPyPuCC, producing 5'-hexanucleotide protruding ends. Endonucleases HgiBI, HgiCII and HgiEI are isoschizomers of AvaII; HgiCIII and HgiDII are isoschizomers of SalI; and HgiDI and HgiGI are isoschizomers o...

The tremendous interest in enzymes as biocatalysts has led to extensive work in enzyme engineering, as well as associated methodology development. Here, a new framework for computer-aided directed evolution of enzymes (CADEE) is presented which allows a drastic reduction in the time necessary to prepare and analyze in silico semi-automated directed evolution of enzymes. A pedagogical example of...

Life as we know it heavily relies on biological catalysis, in fact, in a very nonromantic version of it, life could be considered as a series of chemical reactions, regulated by the guarding principles of thermodynamics. In ancient times, a beating heart was a good sign of vitality, however, to me, it is actually the presence of active enzymes that counts… Though we do not usually pay attention...

An ecological study of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains in spontaneous alcoholic fermentation has been conducted in the same winery for two consecutive years (1994 and 1995). Yeast cells were identified and characterized using mitochondrial DNA restriction analysis. Although a great diversity of wild strains was observed, a sequential substitution of S. cerevisiae strains during the different p...

An astounding number of important regulatory and structural proteins are subject to modification by the attachment of ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins. This modification acts as a targeting signal, delivering the modified protein to different locations in the cell and modifying its activity, macromolecular interactions, or half-life. Deubiquitination, or the removal of this modification, is...

Emulsions stabilized by enzyme-nanoparticle (NP) complexes were used to fabricate robust biocatalytic scaffolds after core solidification via crosslinking. These biocatalysts feature ease of formation, high retention of enzymatic activity and reusability.
