Unravelling the interaction of biological macromolecules with ligands and substrates at high spatial and temporal resolution remains a major challenge in structural biology. The development of serial crystallography methods at X-ray free-electron lasers and subsequently at synchrotron light sources allows new approaches to tackle this challenge. Here, a new polyimide tape drive designed for mix...

Reflections on advances and retreats in biochemistry have, over the years, generated several maxims. The late Efraim Racker’s ‘don’t waste clean thinking on dirty enzymes’ has been one of the most durable. On the occasion of a lecture in Jerusalem a decade ago, I framed a list of the ten ‘best’ maxims as ‘commandments’, which were later published as a ‘Guest Commentary’ in the Journal of Bacter...

A convenient synthesis of sidechain-modified phytosterols is achieved via a temporary masking of the stigmasterol 5,6-alkene as an epoxide. Following performance of the desired modification, the alkene is regenerated through a mild deoxygenation. The approach is applied to the syntheses of β-sitosterol and campesterol acetate, and suggests a facile route to the (Z)-isomers of Δ22–23

We report highly chemo- and regioselective reductive transpositions of methyl carbonates to furnish olefin products with complementary regioselectivity to that of established Pd-catalysis. These Rh- and Ir-catalysed transformations proceed under mild conditions and enable selective deoxygenation in the presence of functional groups that are susceptible to reduction by metal hydrides.

A kinetic model based on allosteric mechanisms of cooperativity fits the experimentally observed phosphate dependence of hemoglobin reactions. Subunit inequivalence is found to be important in analyzing hemoglobin kinetics. The observed increase in the rate of deoxygenation in the presence of organic phosphates is primarily related to the increased rate of dissociation of the second oxygen mole...

Aqueous copper-mediated radical polymerization of acrylamides and acrylates in carbonated water resulted in high monomer conversions (t < 10 min) before undergoing depolymerization (60 min > t > 10 min). The regenerated monomer was characterized and repolymerized following deoxygenation of the resulting solutions to reyield polymers in high conversions that exhibit low dispersities.

Sir: With the appearance of an aminoglycoside 4', 4"-nucleotidyl transferase,') selective modification of the clinical important amikacin (1) at these positions became of interest. Although enzymatic deactivation involving hydroxyl groups usually is overcome by "deoxygenation' 1,2) our efforts are focussed on the introduction of a substituent, which lacks ability to participate in a resistance ...

O2 plays a pivotal role in aerobic metabolism and regulation of cell and tissue function. Local differences and fluctuations in tissue O2 levels are well documented; however, the physiological significance of O2 microgradients, particularly at the subcellular level, remains poorly understood. Using the cell-penetrating phosphorescent O2 probe Pt-Glc and confocal fluorescence microscopy, we visu...
