The prevalence of H. pylori infection in 200 dyspeptic patients undergoing upper G.I. endoscopy was investigated by histology and rapid urease test. H. pylori was associated with 86% cases of chronic gastritis, 84.6% cases of duodenal ulcers and 78.5% of gastric ulcers. None of the 15 histologically normal gastric biopsies showed H. pylori.
Helicobacter pylori and functional dyspepsia: review of previous studies and commentary on new data.
Many studies have attempted to prove a link between Helicobacter pylori infection and functional dyspepsia but the results have been conflicting. Several mechanisms have been postulated for how H pylori associated inflammation disturbs antral and duodenal function but no pathophysiological explanation of how H pylori may cause dyspeptic symptoms is presently available.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the endoscopic findings of dyspeptic patients unresponsive to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and analyze if there is any correlation between these findings and dyspeptic symptoms via predetermined inquiry. METHODS Patients between 18 and 45 years of age were selected among those referred to our unit for upper GI endoscopy due to failure to achieve improvement in dyspeptic...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Patients with functional dyspepsia who have hypersensitivity to gastric distension have more prevalent pain, suggesting the presence of hyperalgesia. It is unclear whether this reflects activation of pain specific afferent pathways or multimodal afferent pathways that also mediate non-painful sensations. In the former case, hyperalgesia should occur when intensity of non-pai...
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and histological features of endoscopic nodular gastritis (NG) in adult dyspeptic patients and its relation to Helicobacter pylori infection. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A retrospective endoscopic report review of 2,142 patients identified 67 patients with NG during the period from 1 September 2006 to 31 August 2007. A subset of 32 NG patients (group 1) who had ...
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that an altered visceral perception threshold plays a role in the pathogenesis of upper gastrointestinal tract symptoms in dyspeptic patients. However, it is not clear whether the compliance and adaptive relaxation of the proximal stomach contribute to the symptoms. AIMS To investigate whether abnormal relaxation or adaptation of the proximal stomach during the i...
Objectives: To develop an easy applicable diagnostic scoring rule to determine the presence of peptic ulcers in dyspeptic patients in the primary care setting, and to evaluate whether Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) testing has added value to optimal history taking. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Patients selected from general practitioner’s offices in the area of Utrecht, the Netherlan...
