BACKGROUND The finite volume solver Fluent (Lebanon, NH, USA) is a computational fluid dynamics software employed to analyse biological mass-transport in the vasculature. A principal consideration for computational modelling of blood-side mass-transport is convection-diffusion discretisation scheme selection. Due to numerous discretisation schemes available when developing a mass-transport nume...

We observe the suppression of the 1D transport of an interacting elongated Bose-Einstein condensate in a random potential with an amplitude that is small compared to the typical energy per atom, dominated by the interaction energy. Numerical calculations reproduce our observations well. We propose a scenario for disorder-induced trapping of the condensate in agreement with our findings.

Recent surface observations have emphasised the importance of bedload transport by rivers and streams on Mars Titan. Previous “hydraulic” analysis, however, has also shown that as suspended load should be possible, if not more prevalent due to lower critical shear stresses, under reduced gravity conditions compared with Earth; where dominant mode sediment flux is load. A new suspended-load equi...

The Ohmic conductance and current through two quantum dots in series is investigated for the case of incoherent tunnelling. A generalised master equation is employed to include the discrete nature of the energy levels. Regions of negative differential conductance can occur in the I-V characteristics. Transport is dominated by matching energy levels, even when they do not occur at the charge deg...

X-ray microtomography is routinely used to image the three-dimensional pore space of sedimentary rocks. Flow and transport properties can then be simulated directly in such images. Advective transport in porous media is frequently simulated using streamlines. We present a novel streamline tracing algorithm based on a substantial development of the most widely used method (the Pollock algorithm)...

Ballistic hot electron transport overcomes the well-known problems of conductivity and spin lifetime mismatch that plague spin injection attempts in semiconductors using ferromagnetic ohmic contacts. Through the spin dependence of the mean free path in ferromagnetic thin films, it also provides a means for spin detection after transport. Experimental results using these techniques (consisting o...

Transport in weighted networks is dominated by the minimum spanning tree (MST), the tree connecting all nodes with the minimum total weight. We find that the MST can be partitioned into two distinct components, having significantly different transport properties, characterized by centrality--the number of times a node (or link) is used by transport paths. One component, superhighways, is the in...

Metal-molecule-metal junctions are the key components of molecular electronics circuits. Gaining a microscopic understanding of their conducting properties is central to advancing the field. In the present contribution, we highlight the fundamental differences between single-molecule and ensemble junctions focusing on the fundamentals of transport through molecular clusters. In this way, we elu...
