Facial reconstruction relies on the creativity of surgeons as well as a clear understanding in the properties of local flaps. Choosing the correct procedure begins with thorough analysis of the defect. Multiple reconstructive options often exist, which can then be narrowed and refined based on the specific qualities of the defect and the history of the patient. Careful planning ultimately leads...

Endoscopic surgery as a less invasive method of surgery, is more diicult to perform. The associated problems are visual issues, hand/tool's movement, and force/tactile sensing. To overcome some of these diiculties, in this paper new design concepts are reviewed and proposed such as tools with exible stem, suturing device, positioning stand, and robotic endeeectors for master-slave systems.

Despite being empirically designed based on a simple understanding of TCR signaling, T cells engineered with chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) have been remarkably successful in treating patients with advanced refractory B cell malignancies. However, many challenges remain in improving the safety and efficacy of this therapy and extending it toward the treatment of epithelial cancers. Other asp...

Design for production (DFP) refers to methods that evaluate manufacturing system performance as a function of product design variables. DFP can lead a product development team to consider changing the product design to avoid problems or improve profitability. In addition, DFP can provoke suggestions to improve the manufacturing system. This paper describes the DFP approach and discusses applica...

Building resilience into today's complex infrastructures is critical to the daily functioning of society and its ability to withstand and recover from natural disasters, epidemics, and cyber-threats. This study proposes quantitative measures that capture and implement the definition of engineering resilience advanced by the National Academy of Sciences. The approach is applicable across physica...
