The confocal laser microscope is a novel and interesting noninvasive tool for imaging skin lesions and subsurface skin lesions that are not visible to the naked eye or even by dermoscopy. Skin can be imaged in vivo or freshly biopsied (in vitro) skin specimens can be visualized immediately without the processing that is required for routine histopathology. Dynamic events (real time imaging) in ...

Replacement of a wounded or destroyed tissue is now technically possible using an in vitro method of tissue engineering. This method involves isolating and culturing human cells (autologous or not) in optimal conditions to form a reconstructed tissue with similar characteristics to its in vivo counterpart. Burn victims were the first patients to benefit from this method in 1981, wherein reconst...

The molecular circadian clock, which consists of transcription-translation feedback loops, is robust in all skin layers. As dysfunction associated with diseases, understanding the clock may provide insights into disease development and management. Particularly, core machinery interacts elements wound healing process such as fibroblast migration, manipulation network or alternation wounding time...

Deep burns are characterized by the presence of a necrotic eschar that delays healing and results in local systemic inflammatory response following secondary intention: heavy scarring. Early surgical debridement followed grafting was major advance deep burn care is now standard care, reducing mortality hypertrophic Eschars have alternatively been managed non-surgical, autolytic debridement, whi...

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is known to be involved in multiple inductive events during embryogenesis including the development of amniote skin. Here, we demonstrate that early application of BMP-2 to the lateral trunk of chick embryos induces the formation of dense dermis, which is competent to participate in feather development. We show that BMPs induce the dermis markers Msx-1...

Two differently designed, spatially resolved reflectance spectroscopy-based scanners and two-photon tomography were used for noninvasive in vivo determination of cutaneous carotenoids, and collagen I/elastin aging index of dermis, respectively, in the skin of 29 healthy female volunteers between 40 and 56 years of age. The volunteers received a supplement in the form of a carotenoid-rich natura...

A 57-year-old Japanese man presented with a 10-year history of a plaque on his face. The lesion had gradually increased in volume. Physical examination revealed a brownish-grey plaque, approximately 5 × 5 cm in size, with ulceration on the right nasolabial area (Fig. 1a). Dermoscopy showed a milky-red area with some milia-like cysts and dilated vessels on the surface (not shown). Histo patholog...

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is very rare tumor of dermis layer of skin with the incidence of only 1 case per million per year. DFSP rarely leads to a metastasis (Less than 5% have metastasis), but DFSP can recur locally. We publish a rare case of a recurrent dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and its management with radical excision and interval skin grafting.
